I love a musical.

Seen most but saw Book of Mormon last night, good lord it's amazing!
So funny, so inappropriate, so non pc.

What's your favourite?

Hamilton! Listened to it the other day and am absolutely hooked. I have listened to it constantly for a week now. It is some of the best music I have ever heard! (& I am huge fan of phantom and les mis...)

Saw Everybody's Talking About Jamie at a cinema screening last night and loved it. The actress playing Jamie's mum is a phenomenal singer. Highly recommended.

Heathers was fab - DD saw it twice.

Have tickets for Waitress in March, can't wait.

I saw Hamilton 'deaf', as it were, last year, REALLY enjoyed it so listened to the soundtrack a lot and then saw it again a couple of nights ago having memorised the soundtrack word for word. I think I got different things out of it each time - the first time I was blown away by how good it was lyrically, how clever and interesting and different it felt even though it followed a fairly well worn story arc. This time around I appreciated the performers more, was more able to take in the peripheral action rather than following the words and lips of the person singing. They were different ways of experiencing it but both very good.

Basically, go and see Hamilton 😁

I do rate Matilda though. I hear good things about School of Rock and I'm going to see Aladdin soon which I'm also quite excited about.

Jamie - totally fantastic
Really, thought it was lacklustre, saw it same day as Book of Mormon and Hamilton was the wek before though which probably didnt help.

Oh and Follies - coming back to the National now That is a stunning production.

GlitterPixie · 31/01/2019 22:15

Miss Saigon Billy Elliot Les Mis and Blood Brothers are my favourite

Southwest12 · 31/01/2019 22:46

Hamilton, Sunset, Book of Mormon, Miss Saigon (but not the new Ellen song) and Avenue Q would be my top picks.

Calzone · 31/01/2019 23:00

I saw Barnum with Michael Crawford years ago.

And Michael Ball in Chitty chitty bang bang.....

Comefromaway · 31/01/2019 23:02

I’d love Something Rotten to do a run in the UK.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 01/02/2019 00:14

Jersey Boys is one of my absolute favourites!

I was blown away by Phantom - had seen the film and read the book and didn’t think I’d love the show but it was incredible!

EnidButton · 01/02/2019 00:16

I saw Barnum with Michael Crawford years ago.

EnvyEnvyEnvy x a million! Honestly if I had a time machine I'd go back to the 80's and watch Michael Crawford in PotO and Barnum, saving the world etc would have to wait.

West side story
A star is born (Judy Garland James
Mason)
New York New York Scorsese. Liza Minnelli Robert de Niro. Amazing swing soundtrack.

PhilomenaButterfly · 01/02/2019 08:20

The fight in Cats is a brilliant piece of choreography.

HRTpatch · 01/02/2019 09:28

I loathed Cats.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 01/02/2019 15:31

I wasn’t a fan of Cats either. No real story, just testing about singing (admittedly good) songs and dressed as cats. I am a huge fan of musicals and I even watched it again to see if I ‘got’ it the second time round. No, still couldn’t really pick out a story.

BartonHollow · 01/02/2019 15:56

Got tickets for Mormon! Thanks for heads up

Cats is probably my least favourite but I am curious about the film version

HouseyMcHouseFace · 01/02/2019 18:55

barton you’ll love Mormon, have you listened to the soundtrack yet? My highlight of the show when I first watched it was the faces of the two women sat next to me when they sang ‘hasa diga eebowai’. They didn’t return after the interval. You think you’d at least have a vague idea what it was about before you spent hundreds on tickets!

BartonHollow · 01/02/2019 19:04

@HouseyMcHouseFace

Is it better to know the soundtrack or go in cold?

I was repeatedly warned about content when buying tickets Grin

Iliketeaagain · 01/02/2019 19:07

Wicked
Blood brother
School of rock (my Dd LOVED it)

And mamma Mia is also really fun to see in the theatre.
Plus I have a soft spot for the rocky horror show.

My Dd is finally old enough to watch some in the west end and I'm so happy about it!! DH doesn't have to be tortured to go with me 😁

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 01/02/2019 19:07

Evita and The King and I. Both brilliant and memorable.

cstaff · 01/02/2019 19:14

Joseph
Blood Brothers and
Jersey boys

BartonHollow · 01/02/2019 19:19

I forgot to mention Singing In The Rain's most recent revival and tour. Brilliant.

Comefromaway · 01/02/2019 20:08

If they couldn’t cope with Hasa Diga Eebowai it’s probably a good job they left before the frogs.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 01/02/2019 21:20

I’d forgotten about the frogs comefronaway. Damnit, I want to go and see it again now.

MitziK · 01/02/2019 22:04

I'm not in the salary bracket to have been to see a live show.

But my favourite musicals on film are;

Singin' in the Rain
On the Town
Fiddler on the Roof
Little Shop of Horrors
Oliver
Scrooged (the latter two because I've been part of the orchestra in one and performed in the other)
Bugsy Malone (because my cousin was in the film)

OH has never watched any, so I sat him down in front of On the Town and he loved it, he then took me to see an open air showing of Singin' in the Rain as a surprise - I think that possibly counts as the most romantic thing he's ever done (and he really enjoyed it, too).

BartonHollow · 01/02/2019 22:38

I'm not in the salary bracket either I get the cheapest tickets and usually see touring, though I have seen a few West End as treats.
