Anyone know Washington DC?

Ds1 has been offered an unpaid internship and is looking for accommodation but not knowing anything about the place, has no idea where to look for cheap but not grotty digs. Are there any specific areas to look at or avoid?

I lived there 20 years ago so things my have changed but ...

DC is a VERY divided city. divided by race & class, even from one block to another. From a map, it is not possible to tell which areas to live in and which to avoid. Also, public transport is not great.

DS should definitely get in touch with other people working at the same job or other interns and get local advice. Depending on the time of year, it might be possible to get student accommodation at a university.

20 years ago, I lived in AU Park / Friendship heights and that was safe but dull.
