Have you ever been stuck in a lift?

Just wondering how often it happens and how long you're stuck for.

I'm scared of getting stuck so never use them but my Mum is struggling with stairs now but doesn't like to use lifts on her own so I need to start getting over my phobia.

I was talking to a member of staff in Debenhams earlier about it and he told me they're always breaking down, I asked how long before they get people out and he said "not long, about an hour".Shock

Only once for me, 9 months pregnant with my disabled mum, another lady with a newborn and toddler. Only for around 20 minutes but felt a lifetime. The poor guy’s face that opened the lift was an absolute picture Grin

I heard on the radio the other day about a woman that had been stuck in a lift for the whole weekend- worked for a very wealthy man, and was a private building, and he was away. I'll see if I can find the link. She must have had to wee in there!

Not stuck in a lift as such, but when on holiday is Israel, we were in a hotel lift during an earthquake. That was scary! The lift continued to move, but it was rocking side to side and you could hear it banging against the sides. We were very glad when it finally stopped and we could get out. It give me a fear of enclosed spaces for years after. I couldn't go in a lift for quite a while, and even now, I start feeling dizzy in any small room, such as a toilet cubicle.

Always use a lift, never been stuck.

Large London hospital. Between 21-22 floors. For about 45 mins. It was only that long because there was an emergency elsewhere. We pried the door open a bit & a skinny girl got out. Her bag didn’t, so we had to help her force it through. She wandered off & didn’t even speak to staff! Cheeky mare.

In CEX with my DS then 13 months. It was one where you have to keep the button held in and if you stop pressing the button it stops. About 1/3 way up it made a horrible screaching noise like metal on metal, made DS cry uncontrollably so I let go of the button, comforted him then pressed the button to go again but nothing happened, pressed up and down again nothing, pressed the emergency button- nothing. Thought maybe the emergency button is silent and sent a signal so they know im stuck, waited 10-15 minutes before realising actually no they don’t know im here. Phone had no signal (never does in the shopping centre) so couldnt even ring anyone. Felt like a twat but kept shouting hello but i guess they couldnt hear me. Was stuck for 1 hour 40 ish minutes before i managed to log onto the centres wifi and messaged my DP who came in to tell them i was stuck. Free’d after just over 4 hours. DS was fine as i kept singing with him and had a baby tv app on my phone but i genuinely thought we’re going to die in here. Will never use a lift like that again

PivotPivotPivottt · 31/01/2019 09:51

I often have a dream I'm in a lift which goes out of control and is flying up and down. I think I'll avoid the Cardiff shopping centre story Shock

jcq17 · 31/01/2019 09:51

Yes in Tenerife. It took ages to
Get us out of
The ceiling and my dad had walked so wondered where me my mum and brother had got to 😂😂

BearSoFair · 31/01/2019 10:14

Yep, at work. To be fair, we are advised just use it for goods as it can be a bit unreliable but I was lazy and didn't fancy doing the stairs, thought 'it's been fine for ages, I'll just hop in for one floor'. Big mistake Blush Was in there about 20 minutes so it could have been a lot worse! Bit of a fright when the lights suddenly turned off after 5 minutes though!

Notquiteagandt · 31/01/2019 10:34

Missed a flight once. Got stuck in lift from the carpark upto terminal. That was errrm fun. Luckily they felt sorry for me so upgraded me. So not too bad.

MissCalamity · 31/01/2019 10:48

I was 13 on my first holiday abroad and I got stuck in the lift with my sister, it was terrifying! It was in an apartment block so quite a bit away from the reception area, it was only probably 10 mins and it started moving again, but it put me off going in it for the rest of the holiday & I climbed the 6 flight of stairs instead!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/01/2019 10:53

The one in halls used to break so often that they had put in a direct line to the office/reception and they'd either come and sit outside the doors and talk to you or stay on the phone until you were freed!

proudestofmums · 31/01/2019 11:46

Yes once at work. I’m not saying this to,sound good but it’s relevant but - I was one of the highest status people,in the building and the lift was stuck with the doors open between floors! So many people in the (smallish) building found an excuse to need to walk past the lift while I was there! I was there about 40 minutes nd luckily had been to the loo just before I went in!

RavenLG · 31/01/2019 11:59

Not stuck in a lift but was in one once when it broke / crashed. In Turkey, we had just checked in to the hotel and were told to go in lift up to room. Sign in the lift said 4 people and luggage. The chap who was ushering us in assured us it was fine (6 adults, me around 7 years old and suitcases). No idea why they pilled us all in tbh. It went up maybe half a foot then plummeted down to the basement (one floor). Lift broke, mirrors fell off the wall, I smashed me elbow. CF hotel owner tried to make us pay for it! Thought my dad and uncles might actually kill him.

Heatherjayne1972 · 31/01/2019 13:56

Apparently it takes an hour for the engineer to get there and rescue you but there’s safety regulation so the lift won’t just plummet down
It either goes up to the top or right down trying to reset itself
Yes I was listening to Jeremy vine on radio 2 Monday lunchtime !

OutPinked · 31/01/2019 13:58

Once in a library with my then very young DC who proceeded to scream and the middle one is still petrified of lifts to this day. It was all very embarrassing, obviously their screams were heard throughout an otherwise quiet library... It was a stannah lift rather than regular one and you basically had to operate it yourself, one of the buttons got jammed and the door wouldn’t open Blush.

In an Apple shop years ago.Was only stuck for 15 mins and I got a free iPod and cup of coffee for my troubles Grin

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 31/01/2019 18:40

Some great stories here although I do wish I hadn't asked as I'm now more scared so Mom will have to go on her own!

The only thing I've ever been stuck on was the Pirate Ship at Alton Towers, the break pipe burst and was spurting hydraulic fluid in the air which the ship kept swinging through for 25 minutes until it swung to a stop.

We were lucky because it covered the other side of the ride and only had a couple of spots of it but the poor people in the path of it were soaked.
We were given a pass to jump the queues for the rest of the day which was great but we bumped into one of the girls who got soaked and they only got a pass for 5 rides and weren't given any clean clothes.
