Echo dot and amazon music help

I have 2 echo dots and I have amazon prime. Iadded the 3.99 per month music bit onto it. Have I misunderstood - I thought you could pay the 3.99 and use amazon music unlimited on one device at a time, ie, one echo dot at a time. Alexa is now telling us that we need another subscription to play music unlimited on each one of them. I know you need to pay for the family package to use music on more than one device similutaneously but I'm only trying to use it on individual devices one at a time.

Bit confused but hopefully someone knows the answer.

As I understand it the 3.99 option is tied to one device and you do need the family one in order to switch between devices. Either that or have a 3.99 subscription for each debt.
