Weird Whatsapp message, scam?

I got two whatsapps tonight from someone not in my phone book. I can see their name and it's a fairly common one but not someone I recognise. Message one reads Flis, is that you? Message two says You there??

Is it a scam? I can't work out what the scam would be as there are no links to click but I definitely don't know them and they used my actual first name. Googled but nothing similar came up.

Sounds like someone's changed their number. Cant see any harm in replying initially

I had a similar thing on my WhatsApp tonight from a Pakistani number. Bizarrely my friend was sat next to me and she had the exact same two messages. So odd

That is weird!

I'm not sure it would be someone who has changed their number as I can see the name and I don't know them. Surely if you got a new phone you would change your name on whatsapp?

Sometimes people just take a number down wrong...happened to me when I was added to a group chat about some blokes stag night Grin

It may be totally innocent and might be helpful to just tell them they have the wrong number...

TheFlis12345 · 29/01/2019 21:14

They have used my first name though, so I don't think they have just got a wrong number.

Is your name on your whatsapp info?

TheFlis12345 · 29/01/2019 21:21

Actually that is a good point. No, my full first name (which they have used) isn't, it's just the abbreviated version. It's not a huge leap to guess what my full name is but it could be a couple of things (e.g. I could have Beth as my whatsapp name but that could be Bethany or Elizabeth, and they got the right full name).

Well if the number is "forrin" I probably would ignore...but if a normal mobile number I would reply and say "Who is this pls"...without confirming or denying if you see what I mean.

TheFlis12345 · 29/01/2019 21:51

Thanks folks. It looks like a normal number and doesn't sound like a known scam, so have just messaged asking who it is.

Yea it sounds innocent to me

TheFlis12345 · 29/01/2019 22:47

It was spam! He followed up with a 'Make $1200 a day' link nonsense, then asked he to send him a photo of my dog! (I don't have one). Reported and blocked!

That's a new one to me - can't keep up with all these scammers :(

Oh blimey, I'm way too trusting!

I got asked out by WhatsApp the other night! The person randomly popped up with ‘Hi’ a few pleasantries and then said we met in my old city before asking me out 😂🤦‍♀️ I said I was married and declined and went off very confused.
