HELP! I Can't get my Kitchen Stove Top Clean!!!

I've never had this problem in my home country but I've been beaten by stove top stuck on grime in the UK. 😑 This is a huge problem because it looks crap and we're trying to sell our flat. 😐

I've tried many cleaning solutions from Tesco and Wilko, sponges, scourers, magic eraser, plastic scraper, baking soda, but my stove top still looks like shit.

I saw some bladed/metal scrapers on Amazon but I'm not sure if they can be used on metal stove tops. 🤔

Please help me Mumsnet.

Hob Brigjt is amazing. Give it a go.

Cornflakedout · 28/01/2019 19:46

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but is there any way you can soak the top ie. get enough water on the metal to soften all the grime?
Failing that, oven cleaner?

missmouse101 · 28/01/2019 19:47

Cif cream and scouring pad will get that off!

White vinegar mixed with bicarbonate lifts pretty much any stain.

FinallyFree123456789 · 28/01/2019 19:51

The pink stuff

Pound shop sells it or Pound stretcher

shortgreengiraffe · 28/01/2019 19:54

Yes you need something with a mild abrasive. Try The Pink Stuff or Astonish Oven Cleaner. You put a small amount on a sponge or cloth and slowly rub it in to the grime.

ItsPrettyGrim · 28/01/2019 19:56

Cif cream and scouring has already failed as has vinegar and bicarbonate which is my go to for tough jobs.

This pink stuff?

I don't think I've tried Hob Brite either.

Brillo pads work, I’ve got the same kind of hob.

littlemisscynical · 28/01/2019 19:59

Another vote for the pink stuff

ItsPrettyGrim · 28/01/2019 20:00

I'm most concerned about this one hob, because my husband accidentally burned plastic on it awhile back and it's remained permanently darker then the rest with a kind of stuck on crust. 😷

@ItsPrettyGrim

Yeah that's the stuff

rytonsister · 28/01/2019 20:02

Get a professional in. Oven-nu or similar.

ItsPrettyGrim · 28/01/2019 20:03

@JustBeingJobless

Have you tried brillo pads With the pink stuff? Cuz this is now like 6 layers of muck.

Sexnotgender · 28/01/2019 20:04

Try barkeepers friend, the powder stuff.

JustBeingJobless · 28/01/2019 20:17

@ItsPrettyGrim I use the ones with the soap already in them and they always get mine spotless. They’re awful jobs for staining! I always wipe it over after I’ve used it yet it always ends up a mess!

TheProvincialLady · 28/01/2019 20:25

You know those oven cleaners where you fill a bag with oven shelves and a bottle of chemical? But one of those and spread some of the liquid on the hob. WEAR GLOVES. After half an hour or so you will be able to wipe it clean. Nothing cuts through crusted on grease like it.

TowerRavenSeven · 28/01/2019 20:42

I'd saturate sudsy ammonia in paper towels and place them in wet rings around the burners and wait a half hour or so. Then remove and wash with some fairy liquid. The ammonia should melt the gunk. Try to air out the room though, ammonia can cause headaches!

ItsPrettyGrim · 28/01/2019 20:53

Thank you for all the suggestions, going to buy a few of them and try each individually. ☺

Another vote for Barkeepers Friend (powder) and a damp cellulose sponge.

hairymuffet · 28/01/2019 21:19

You could get a new one for £50

ItsPrettyGrim · 28/01/2019 21:56

@hairymuffet

Really? Where?

OP posts:
hairymuffet · 29/01/2019 07:24

Ah. Sorry, the cheapest one I can find is £80. Obviously a few years since I got one Blush

ItsPrettyGrim · 01/02/2019 14:07

It's clean!!! 1.5 hours, 3/4 of a tub of the pink stuff, and 3 brillo pads later. Thanks everyone! 😊

Hurrah!

For anyone else reading this thread the Pink Stuff is a small pink tub of mildly abrasive cleaner. It is often in cheap shops for around a pound. Worth having in. It brought my Belfast style sink up a treat.
