Aberdeen

We will be travelling by train to Inverness via Aberdeen in May. We have the option of spending either an hour and a half or three hours in Aberdeen. Would it be worth it ? We will be on foot so obviously won't be able to go far from the station.

Is there much to see and would the extra time make much of a difference?

Would be very grateful for any help from those of you who are familiar with Aberdeen

I wouldn't bother to be honest! Especially not if you can't wander far from the station. (lived in Aberdeen for 16 years!)

Things you can see in an hour and a half from the train station - maritime museum

in 3 hours - beach or old aberdeen

to be honest Aberdeen really isn't a touristy place especially as the art gallery is shut as is provest skene's house. The town centre isn't particularly interesting to hang about in as the main shopping area of union street is also a very busy road for traffic. Old aberdeen with the university is nice for a stroll and the beach is nice and sandy but also in Aberdeen so really cold.

I'da do an hour and a half and have a quick wander round the maritime museum which is free and less than five minutes from the train station

Shopping centre is attached to the station and has a reasonable range of shops/eating places and cinema-certainly better than Inverness if that makes a difference. Out of interest, where (roughly) are you coming from? Usually travelling to Inverness from the South involves changing at Perth.
