Morbid Kids?

As a child I used to read lots of comics like Bunty and Mandy. I was in a shop today selling old comics and it had some of these. I read some of the stories and was reminded of how morbid some of the stories I loved in these comics were.

So the ongoing story about neglectful paid carers of three children who were paid by their father to care for them (their mother had died, while he travelled the world working. The father then dies and the paid carers get approval to foster the kids ( they want the kids inherited money) and proceed to be evil carers.

The ongoing story about a cruel ballet teacher in a ballet boarding school who used to rap the girls around the legs with her cane if they got a step wrong.

I LOVED these morbid stories. Were you a morbid kid as well?

Oh LOVED them yes. In Mandy there was the fabulous "Angel" series. Angel was a well born young woman who finds out she's going blind so dedicates her life to helping raise street kids in London.

Bloody great.

There was another one The Secret Orphan....her Mother was dying and wanted her to go to the school she'd attended herself...so she writes to the school and her child is accepted only once the Mother dies...so the girl pretends her Mum is dead so she can get looked after and make her Mum happy.

But the school is now a terrible place run by two women who abuse the girls!

Awful stuff but so great when I was ten!
