Facebook message request

Does anyone know what happens if you send a message to someone on Facebook if you aren’t friends with them on there yet?

I’ve had a look online but some say the other person gets a notification, and others say it goes straight to a hidden folder and they won’t know unless they specifically look for it?

Facebook updated a while back so they should get a notification if they're app is up to date x

I’m a landlord and advertise properties on Facebook, if someone messages who I am not friends with I get a notification to say xxx wants to connect with you

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 27/01/2019 19:36

I work with them. It entirely depends. Some people will get a notification, some will be "filtered" into a spam folder within their message requests and then there is no notification. What is filtered is determined by an algorithm that works out wether you're likely to want to hear from that person or not - so people messaging you from an ad or post in a group will likely not be filtered, someone you have few or no connections with who randomly messages you will be more likely to be. The contents of the message also plays a part.

That sounded much more bigheaded than I thought it would, I was multitasking, apologies Blush

That's a messenger request not a message - it means your Messenger "friends", so they can see if you are online, if you've read your messages etc. They can also be filtered by the algorithm, though.

I get the above ‘wants to connect’ when someone not on my friends list has sent me a message too.

Junglerum · 27/01/2019 19:54

I’ve never had someone send a request without messaging though. Pretty sure person is notified regardless I’ve had them come through from people with zero connections on the other side of the world

BifsWif · 27/01/2019 20:22

They do all come through, but you can read it and then choose to accept it or decline it. The sender can’t see that it’s been delivered or read until accepted by the recipient.

Hollyhock39 · 27/01/2019 20:23

Didn’t sound big headed at all Anchor

So when we say ‘messenger request’ is that something I need to do to help them see the message or is it too late now I’ve already sent it?

This is their (cropped, obviously) profile on FB. I clicked the ‘message’ button and it took me directly to a new screen on messenger. There wasn’t any option to ‘add’ them.

They get an alert to tell them they have a message. They can then read that message in private and decide whether to contact you back or not. They can read it without you knowing they have in other words.

Pinkprincess1978 · 27/01/2019 20:42

Of late I get messages but did a couple of years ago find the hidden folder and found a few messages in there including a competition I had won a couple of years before that I missed.

Hollyhock39 · 28/01/2019 10:08

Thanks for the replies, so it seems the general consensus is that they will get a notification unless Facebook applies an unknown algorithm and ‘filters’ the message.
