DD's flat is on top floor of old 4 storey + basement house. It's the only rented flat, others privately owned. House currently has structural problems and, cutting long story short, her bathroom has been taken apart (one wall demolished) all tiles off, bath removed, flooring and ceiling being replaced. DD was initially advised repairs would take about 4 days but more problems were revealed when work actually began. Landlord agreed to pay for a nearby B&B for 3 days last week when the area was like a building site, full of dust etc. He then provided the keys to a flat two floors down which has been sold and new people not moving in until 28 January, saying she could use the bath/shower there. Not great but better than nothing.
Builder now says work will take a further 7-10 days. Water off on Monday to replace toilet (hopefully just when she's at work) so DD will then have a basin and loo. So for 7-10 days DD wont have shower or bath and asked landlord if he would consider B&B again. He has replied saying no, but will deduct rent for the duration of works. Rent divided by 31 days equals £20 a day, whereas B&B is £70 a night, so she will be paying the difference. Is this considered fair? No fault of her own but out of pocket by a few hundred pounds. Any comments or advice please.
