DS is in year one and struggling with spelling and reading.

He is reads to us every day and we read him two books as part of his bedtime routine. He has problems with phonemes, we do work together, i.e. Words containing a phoneme, spotting a phoneme in books. What else can we do to help him? The school have suggested a website with games but it doesn't work on an iPad, there are so many choice for apps that I am feeling overwhelmed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Whatever’s you choose make sure it’s UK English.

Is school using a particular phonics programme to teach?

Thanks @Smalldogwatchingsquirrels I'll have a look at that app and good tip on U.K. English.

They are using jolly phonics @SnailorSwift but the app looks quite basic, just phonics not phonemes. Going to have a look at some video reviews of the jolly phonics app.

The website might not work if it is flash, or similar, based. You can by pass some of these by accessing it via something like Puffin browser instead of safari.

You could look at an app such as Pocket Phonics.

Be careful with some apps as they aren't all uk English based.

Look for the Initial Code app. It's one of the only ones I've found that teaches phonics properly. It was free as well (I think).
