Would you go for a 4 day break to New York in February? Very rough itinerary- visit 9/11 museum, day of shopping, Empire State Building, Boat trip to see Statue of Liberty.

Yay or nay ?

We went in March a couple of years ago - I tacked myself onto dh’s business trip. We stayed at The Ludlow. We had a lovely bracing walk along the Skyline, and while he was working I visited the Met Museum of Art (amazing) and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden (bad time of year; Kew and Wisley are well ahead of the game with winter planting).

We did a lot of eating to warm up.

I’ve been since then in June, which was a bit too hot and sweaty. I think on balance I prefer it in winter actually.

Thanks for all the tips , I was still up at 5am googling , I need a spreadsheet! I’ve got so many windows open on my pc with different reviews, hotels , flights etc I’m befuddled!

I think we will definitely go though.

We're booked to go in March for my birthday. Booked in to Hotel Metro as previously mentioned, got a really good deal through virgin holidays.
Weather looks to be really varied mid March so I'm going to have to pack for all occasions.

Exciting, I just have to keep my mouth shut now as it’s a surprise for my dd.

Anyone got any gaffer tape ? Grin

Ah brilliant! Hope you have an amazing time!

Oddcat · 26/01/2019 15:23

Next problem ! How the hell do you get an acceptable photo of your passport when booking the Esta ? Mine keep getting rejected.

For Feb bring a really good quality chapstick for your lips and another (in a different container color) for your nose. With the salt they put down and dry air, sinuses dry out and really hurt. A bit of vasaline in the nose works wonders.

Will do- thanks

Grin OP at the risk of sounding me too I stayed in the Edison last summer! Loved it. There is a brilliant diner downstairs and an amazing rum bar in the foyer. Have a wonderful time.

I went February. It was very cold but still worth it. I also stated in the Hudson hotel near to Time Square and Central Park. The rooms are not huge (like any hotel in New York) but it's cool and well located. I had a body warmer and wool coat, gloves.

If you like art I would go to Moma and to the Frick - very beautiful
Victorian house which contains a lovely collection. I also did the 9/11 museum and the skyline bar for sunset, central park and shopping.

Interestingly and probably more than you are planning I also took the train to DC and spent a few days there - it's only 2-3 hours by train. Fantastic museums there - all free.

They've been closed for the last 3 weeks, and in 3 weeks time they might close again if Trump throws another tantrum. I wouldn't plan a trip to DC in Feb to see the musums.

Flatwhite32 · 26/01/2019 19:13

We went there last year in February half term when I was 17 weeks pregnant. We loved it! It was cold, but we wrapped up and we were fine. Flights were cheap too as it isn't a popular time of year to go. We stayed at the Hampton by Hilton Times Square South, which was a great location.

BulletWithABun · 26/01/2019 19:25

I've stayed at the Edison. Ask for one of the refurbished rooms as the old ones are grim. The refurbished ones are fine though.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 26/01/2019 19:49

@Want2bSupermum

So there IS decent nightlife in Jersey City...your post made me grin, because we're never out late enough to experience it.

We did go into a restaurant with a lively-looking bar attached once - but we had to leave by 9 to get the kids to bed. Grin

The hotels are def. nice and good weekend rates.

Oddcat · 26/01/2019 21:22

Does anyone know the rough cost of a taxi from Newark airport to the Edison hotel ?

OP posts:
EdWinchester · 26/01/2019 21:32

I think the cab will be about $70. It's a bit further than JFK and they don't do the flat fare from Newark.

I have been in Jan and Feb and it's fine. Cold, but not unbearable. Better than the unbearable heat of July and August!

Trying81 · 26/01/2019 22:39

We went in November, stayed at the Renwick which is a small Hilton boutique hotel - great spot, right near Grand Central Station so handy for any subway line

Trying81 · 26/01/2019 22:40

Oops just saw you’ve booked.

Our taxi from JFK was a set fee plus tolls and tips, assume it’s same from Newark

BeekyChitch · 26/01/2019 23:57

YAY!!! I'm pretty sure February is the cheapest month as well?? Although it will be a long tiring journey it will be absolutely worth it! Definitely bring Comfortable shoes for walking and warm clothing!

nutellalove · 27/01/2019 00:01

I wouldn't. American winters are not like English winters! It's actually very cold and often snowy there. I just wouldn't enjoy it at all. My friend went last Feb and said never again. It was too cold to be outdoors and walk around and they got stuck in a snowstorm and loads of things Were shut for a few days

Flatwhite32 · 27/01/2019 17:20

@nutellalove that's a shame! We went in Feb half term last year, and the coldest temperature was 2C, so really not too bad. It was really sunny that day too.

nutellalove · 27/01/2019 17:35

@Flatwhite32 that doesn't sound too bad! I guess it's just luck with the weather isn't it. I went to NYC in April and over 4 days we had all weathers- zero degrees celcius one day and 34 two days later- so bizarre!

Oddcat · 27/01/2019 21:21

Nutellalove don’t say that ! I went out today and bought a new goose down coat , a couple of warm jumpers and a hat.

I'd take the train from Newark Airport to Penn Station on 34th Street in NYC. I think it's 40-ish mins from Newark to Penn. You can take the subway or a cab to your hotel.

Not sure what it costs (look at airport website for details or amtrak.com) but I've been on the train that stops at the airport and it's right by a terminal.

I'd avoid driving into NYC, traffic can be horrendous!
