Would you go for a 4 day break to New York in February? Very rough itinerary- visit 9/11 museum, day of shopping, Empire State Building, Boat trip to see Statue of Liberty.

Yay or nay ?

Fly into Newark if you can. It's much closer and easier to go to/from for Jersey City hotels. Also, take a look at the W hotel in Hoboken. Sometimes they have a good deal but it can be rather expensive if they are somewhat full. It's a good location with amazing waterfront views.

Jersey City is ace. Lots of good restaurants and bars. Music scene is alright. You can also just as easily stay in Manhattan and come home later. Hoboken is super safe. I walk home on my own at 2am with no issues. With Jersey City I take a car service. DH is an Uber/lyft person.

Also take a look at airbnb if in Jersey City or Hoboken. There are rental apartments at 333 River Road in Hoboken which are $300 a night for a 2 bed and the Monarch in Jersey City is about the same price. It's nice to have your own kitchen and laundry facilities.

Oh definitely tell them on booking, just drop an email asking for restaurant tips as it's her special birthday! And when you search you may find cookies store your info sp prices are indeed going up on second or third searches, so clear your cookies before you do a final one to book, or use another device.

I was there for a few days last January and they were having a very cold spell. Warm hat, big scarf, thick coat, really warm gloves and snowboots weather.

But places like the 9/11 Memorial were almost empty.

We really enjoyed doing an evening bus tour that went round the city and over to Brooklyn.

I can't help with hotels because we usually stay with family or friends.

Bloodybridget · 26/01/2019 02:04

We were there for a week last February, weather was very mixed, some quite mild days, but the day we did the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island it snowed, and our last day was such heavy snow that everything was closed - schools, libraries, museums - no buses running, and ours was one of the very few flights that got out of JFK in the evening, after we'd struggled to get there on the subway and Sky Train (thank you, Norwegian Airlines).

Bloodybridget · 26/01/2019 02:06

Just realised it wasn't last year, it was 2017, duh!

Oddcat · 26/01/2019 02:27

I still think 2017 was last year . Takes me til about July to get used to being in a new year !

homegrownmumma · 26/01/2019 08:00

I went on valentine's day for 4 days and it was lovely , it had a storm 2 days before hand so it was still Very Icey From the left over snow .
Just take a decent coat and scarf and you'll be fine !
I found the tourist attractions were relatively quiet in February too

homegrownmumma · 26/01/2019 08:01

Oh also book 9/11 museum before you go and book it for the earliest time slot , it was pretty much empty when we went

Bosscastle · 26/01/2019 08:03

Take thermals with you! We've been in Feb and the cold takes your breath away. It was freezing! There was still snow in lots of places incl Central Park.
For cheap drinks avoid the bars around Times Square. We found a great bar called Rudys in the Hells kitchen district (about 10 minutes walk from B'way.) It's a dive bar, really cheap drinks and free hotdogs. It's a mix of locals with a few tourists. Had some great times there!
Also for shopping, Century21 is amazing but very busy. Close to Ground zero.
Afternoon tea at the Plaza is lovely.
Weve been a few times but the first time was my favourite. Nothing prepares you for how big it is!

BFGgirl · 26/01/2019 08:04

I’ve been in feb, warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves and you’ll be fine. We’ve always stayed close to Times Square, very touristy and busy but easy to get everywhere. Most recently we stayed at the Night Times Square as it was so cheap. It was clean and well located, would definitely recommend.

BFGgirl · 26/01/2019 08:09

Oh and also I’d go up the Rockerfeller not the Empire State, queues are much shorter and this way your photos of the city include the Empire State so it’s win-win! Johns of Times Square does great pizza, and I’d recommend a day trip to Williamsburg across the river.

feltcarrot · 26/01/2019 08:10

We stayed in a Hilton Garden hotel on 33rd, close to the ESB and a subway. We had connecting rooms, a double for me and DH and the DC had 2 queen size beds. Think we paid about £1k in July for 3 nights.

BFGgirl · 26/01/2019 08:10

You can just do a return trip on the Staten Island ferry (you don’t get off the boat) to see the Statue of Liberty up close. I don’t really recommend actually visiting Ellis island but just my preference.

Endofrelationship · 26/01/2019 08:11

It's a no from me.

Went in February on our honeymoon and whilst it was great it didn't get above freezing for a single day. One day was -15 according to the thermometer on the side of building and it felt it!

We wrapped up warm but the issue then is that you sweat your ass off as soon as you go in anywhere and have to carry your stuff around with you everywhere.

We went up the empire state building and it was too cold to stand outside for more than a minute yes so. Even the heavily wrapped up security guards were stood by the fours to get blasts of heat as people walked out. It was so cold you couldn't smile with your teeth out as it hurt too much.

Lots of new York needs to be seen on foot, which is harder when cold and it was too snowy to spend much time outside as well, though they are brilliant at getting roads and sidewalks cleared.

Waitingtomove · 26/01/2019 08:13

We are going in feb for my DH 40th. Never been before very excited.

cravingmilkshake · 26/01/2019 08:20

Yes. We went 5 days for our anniversary on the 10 Feb and it was beautiful, snow in the park etc but very cold!

Burpsandfustles · 26/01/2019 09:32

We went one February, snow on ground but really warm, it was great

Notso · 26/01/2019 09:41

We went for our honeymoon in February. It was very cold but both of us like cold weather so didn't find it much of an issue. We used the cloakroom facilities for coats and bags if we were staying somewhere for any length of time.
I'd choose Rockefeller over Empire State Building so you can see the Empire State from the top.
Everywhere touristy was really quiet while we were there. We were one of two couples at the top of the Rock.

Parthenope · 26/01/2019 10:39

Keep an eye on the weather forecasts as your trip approaches and dress appropriately. Winter/ late winter weather can vary hugely. I go to NY in January every year for work, and last year it was bitingly cold at minus seventeen, with blizzards that diverted or grounded a lot of flights, this year the lowest it got was freezing point, and on several days it was warmer than where I live in England.

SatsumasRock · 26/01/2019 10:54

Hotel on Rivington in the lower east side is ace. Huge rooms (most rooms in NYC are miniscule), massive baths and the comfiest beds ever. And actually not massively expensive for what you get.

Walkable to SoHo. Mercifully quite a distance away from Times Square.

I live in NY for a while. This was taken at the end of January. The Hudson river froze. But they're much more set up for it. Things don't come to a standstill as soon as a snowflake is spotted. Just dress appropriately.

New York in February?
TSSDNCOP · 26/01/2019 11:03

It will likely be frigid, but everything keeps going or re-starts super quick if there’s a white-out.

I’d stay in Manhatten island personally. Not fond of mid-town, but those hotels are a great start-point for all the sights.

Recommend an open top bus which may be too cold now I think about it Grin
