Shivering with Pain

Has anyone else ever had this? Twice in my life that I can remember I've been in so much pain that I've had uncontrollable shivering, so much so that I could barely talk.
Once when I was in the later stages of a back to back labour (before the epidural went in and I went down to surgery for forceps) and the second time was when my back went into spasm and I was taken in an ambulance to hospital, once the morphine and various other painkillers kicked in, it went away.
Is it adrenaline that causes it? Does the shivering serve a purpose? Anyone know?

It is adrenaline you are stressed/anxious about the pain and adrenaline kicks in it is the fight or flight response your body just can't cope.
