Best and worst household item you have bought

For me the best has to be my Neato robot vac. I love that it takes me two minutes to clear the floor before I take the dog out and come back to every floor crumb and dust free with a simple tap on my phone. The most pointless has to be the Karcher window vac, I don't clean windows often enough to make it worthwhile and tbh I can clean them just as well without it and do because I forget to charge it up

A car with a heated front windscreen. It's probably normal now but we had an old banger for years. This is a revelation.

RednaxelasPony · 28/01/2019 14:10

Knock off pound shop socktopus - best. Lasted years.

Cheapish coffee maker - worst. Broke in 4 days!

Yearofthemum · 28/01/2019 14:38

The worst was an eleganto potato peeler. I never managed to peel a single potato with it, despite trying plenty.

My best is my Magimix food processor. Apart from that, I get plenty of use out of a small cast iron frying pan (large ones are too heavy), a cake spatula/bowl scraper, a wide potato peeler, and my tiered steamer pans (just normal hob variety).

I use my Dyson V10 a lot more than our very heavy old Henry, although I like both. I hated the old Dyson's, as they blocked constantly.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/01/2019 14:40

I love my:
Dishwasher
Double oven
Splosh kitchen spray
Mixing bowls with rubber bases
Slow cooker
Husband who washes the floors

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/01/2019 14:44

The window vac is one of my favourite things, but I mostly use it to clear condensation from windows on cold mornings.
Worst = the various rubbish hoovers we worked our way through between the Dyson giving up and getting the Henry.

Yogagirl123 · 28/01/2019 14:45

Best George Foreman grill, amazing for toasties
Dishwasher

Worst breville one cup & anything built by VAX

Ethel36 · 28/01/2019 14:47

Tumble dryers my favourite and the vegetable steamer is my least. Its so much easier to use the pan!

TheLastNigel · 28/01/2019 15:41

Dishwasher is the best.
Worst was a sort of pebble filled shower head thing that said it guaranteed improved water pressure. It was awful! No water came out of it at all!

Ifangyow · 28/01/2019 16:20

My best buy is my robot lawn mower. I just sit with my coffee and my book while he runs around cutting the lawn. Fab.

My worst buy was a steam mop. I spent more time mopping up the water it spat out with my normal mop and bucket than I spent steaming the floors.

HaveYouNamechangedForThis · 28/01/2019 16:47

Worst - one of those steam generator irons. Never quite gets hot enough. Spits out brown water unexpectedly despite following decalcification routine properly. Loud in operation, so I can't iron after the kids have gone to bed as the noise keeps them awake. The only benefit to them is the large water reserve but it's hardly a trade off for all the negatives. Expensive. Heavy. Bends the ironing board over time. Is too heavy for the iron place on the board so needs to take up room on the board itself. I've had several different ones, so it's not just the one particular iron that has underperformed.

Best - a bog standard normal iron. Smile Hot. Long long cable. Quiet. Needs filling with water more frequently, but with a big washed-out 2 litre milk bottle or two full of water on hand, that's hardly an issue.

hennipenni · 28/01/2019 16:56

Best: spray mop followed closely by my soup maker.

Worst: Henry Hoover, very heavy to use, cumbersome to move about and not easy to use on the stairs.

IDismyname · 28/01/2019 19:06

I like my Ninja chopper thingy (mini processor), my hand held blender for soups, and my slow cooker.

I've chucked out anything that doesn't work for me - Marie Kondo Style!

Holidayshopping · 28/01/2019 19:17

I hate my Henry hoover as well. If you try to pull him to go around a corner? He just falls over!

I’ve answered already but another best is my Dyson V6 cordless. It’s mounted on charge under the stairs and is brilliant.

Worst-steam cleaner. Total pants and didn’t really do anything.

sdaisy26 · 28/01/2019 19:30

Worst is my cordless dyson. I was desperate for one but it just doesn’t cut it and I’ve gone back to the ancient upright Sebo I inherited from my great aunt. It must be at least 20 years old but it’s brilliant.

Best is probably my induction hob. I am in awe of how quick and responsive it is.

Ronsters · 28/01/2019 20:21

I love my slow cooker and use it most weeks in winter for casseroles. My Dyson cordless vac, as I can zip around really quickly with it.
I also love a cheap knife I bought in Greece on holiday, it looks like a veg knife but has a smooth blunt edge, its brilliant for cutting cheese.
Worst was a steam mop, quite expensive and didn't clean very well.

treaclesoda · 28/01/2019 20:26

My best is a mop that spins the water out instead of wringing it.

Worst is the many coffee makers that I have bought and regretted over the years. Pants, all of them.

CharlyAngelic · 28/01/2019 20:26

Best : wheelbarrow
Worst : Bodum Parmesan grater

MrsPerfect12 · 28/01/2019 20:33

Worst is the yonana machine ( healthy ice cream) crap crap crap

Crimson72 · 28/01/2019 20:38

Worst is my garlic press - it’s a totally pointless contraption IMO, as it leaves a layer of clove in the press every time you use it. Very wasteful!

Best is my cordless Dyson - it’s made vacuuming so much less of a chore.

dalmatianmad · 28/01/2019 20:43

Best buy is my Shark closely followed by my electric pressure cooker.

Worse thing is the steam mop.

Unbelievable18 · 28/01/2019 20:49

Best is my instant pot. Use it every day.

Not sure of my worst yet.

Darls3000 · 28/01/2019 20:54

Best was my Vitamix. Juicing in the morning and cleaning up after is a doddle!!!

Worst was Dyson cordless. Has the sucking power of a gnat and cuts out constantly. So annoying.

Parisbun · 28/01/2019 20:54

Besides the instant pot which is a given I would probably say my Philips air fryer is one thing I would rush out to buy again .
I also love my induction hob - so quick to react and so easy to keep clean after years of stupid gas hobs with cast iron grids that are impossible to clean.
The worst -hmms lots of things Ive used once . The clothes steamer that dribbled warmish water and gave up. Or the stick vacuum that holds about a teaspoon of dust before it needs emptying.
Actually Beldray anything - cheapo shite that I wont have in the house after yet another disastrous buy . In fact Im rapidly going off B&M now that all of their household stuff is Beldary.

TSSDNCOP · 28/01/2019 20:54

Steam cleaner worst.

Oven scrapey thing best.

whenthewhistleblows · 28/01/2019 21:52

dishwasher and global kitchen knives - must haves.

Echo devices - nice to haves - I use them to intercom the children and boom out ‘THIS IS YOUR MOTHER SPEAKING. HAVE YOU BRUSHED YOUR TEETH YET?’ in their bedrooms. They use them for podcasts at night. Bargain for £20 each (prime or Black Friday sales).
