Insurance question

Wondering if anybody knows what to do.
Last night somebody crashed into my mums front garden and took out the wall and destroyed a beautiful tree (it's completely trashed), thankfully nobody was hurt - police came and arrested him as he was high as a kite.
Now where do I go from here to sort out reinstating the wall and the tree? Police said he was insured and to just phone for the crime number but do I then contact my mums home insurance or what? Police bent the branches to get to mums front door but otherwise tree is lying across front of the house and needs to be removed first then replaced.
Further complicated by the fact that my mum has dementia, lives at home alone with daily carers, I have power of attorney for her financial affairs but live 300 miles away. I have contacts near her but ultimately I need to deal with it.
I'd like to get it sorted as soon as possible as mum doesn't deal with stress very well and the tree was one of her ways to remember it was her house.
Help!

Contact your Mum's household insurers, who should arrange for repairs. Get what info you can from the police and give that to your Mum's insurers. Yes you will have to pay an excess but it will get sorted much quicker. Then your Mum's insurers can consider claiming back off the driver's insurers.
