I sell stuff online, someone with similar stuff but who operates from a retail base is moving out of the business and contacted me (all contact online they're not local) offering me their stock.

We negotiated a price I'm happy with now its come to payment they don't have paypal to pay and have suggested bank transfer.

If I paid by credit card would that be safer - would credit card cover/ refund me if nothing was delivered?

It's so easy to set up PayPal that I would be wary. Bank transfer is great for them, rubbish for you. Suggest payment on receipt - same risk you are taking but on them. Bet they won't be keen!

I don't think the Consumer credit act covers business to business transactions, which is what this sounds like.

The "proper" way is to get insurance to cover it - which would be a sledgehammer/nut situation here.

It doesn't feel quite safe. Not so much money it would cripple me but enough to hurt. Also potentially a good deal.

I'm an overthinker!

I think I'll move offline and ring them. Maybe speaking in person will instil confidence.
