Would you apply for the job again?

A few months ago about applying for promotion within my department, only two of us applied, me and a person from another department. The job went to the other person but since then they have decided they want to remain where they are so no longer want the job. My manager at the time (who is also my friend) said that she thought I would now get the job but it didn't happen.

The reason, I was told, was because we were recruiting for a new manager in the department as my friend was moving internally.

The new manager has now started and been with us for just over a month. She has told me that she wants me to have the position but her manager (the person in charge of the whole office and who interviewed me because I'm friends with the original manager) wants to re-advertise the position internally again.

Her manager has also said that the ultimate decision would be made by my manager.

So my WWYD is should I reapply for the position or just take it that the main boss, for whatever reason, doesn't want me to have the job?

BTW I was originally told I didn't get the job in the first place because the other person had more experience than me but that was the only reason.

At my previous employer, there were people that applied for positions as many as 5 times before getting it. I think if you're ambitious and you want the job, you should absolutely apply and do everything you can to prove you're the best candidate. I know it's hard on the ego, but if you want to get ahead, you have to put yourself out there. Good luck OP.

Are there rules in your workplace that promotions must be advertised?

I would take the view that the more senior manager is following a protocol or else wants to ensure that there are no question marks or accusations of unfairness about the process.

And I would definitely reapply.

Good luck

Not that I know of Rainbowqueen but maybe there is. One of my negatives is self doubt so I'm probably over thinking the reasons why I've not been given it.

Thank you both for wishing me luck.

I would say it's protocol to advertise again. We usually would in my place. You have nothing to loose by trying again.

A job has to be advertised by law even if you know you were going to get the job they still have to post the ad
