What do you think SHOULD have been invented by now?

Yet again, I set the Sky box to record a programme, it says it's done it, but when I go to watch it, all that's been recorded is half an hour of over-run news.

Surely we must by now have the technology for the Sky box to know that the previous programme has gone on longer than it was scheduled for, and to wait until the programme I want has actually started before recording?

Likewise, it shouldn't need to record 5 minutes at the start and end of everything.

Drives me nuts!

Does anyone else have any things that they think "We MUST be able to do that by now!"? I don't so much mean things that we wish had been invented, just things that we think should have been.

Even better than shower on suncream would be sun screen in a tablet or injection.

Re showers-I reckon within a few decades we won’t be washing with water at all-there will be some kind of ionic thing that removes dirt particles etc.

This may already exist (please please tell me if it does!) but the ability to search across different apps on my phone. I’m often looking for an address or quote or something, and know it is in a WhatsApp/ email/ text somewhere but never sure where.

Something to successfully collect colostrum.

Seriously, trying to collect with a syringe when my first born couldn't latch on was pure torture. So much is always lost, if anyone found a better way pls share. The memory of this has always driven me mad!!!

Hair dye that only dyes your hair not everything else it touches.

It does on iPhone - I just double checked by typing that phrase on 2 apps on my phone. I just swipe left from home screen pull down & use search

A magical treatment for clubbed feet. Also I am still waiting for the day driverless cars will be readily available.

ginghamstarfish · 24/01/2019 22:40

I've long suspected that many wonderful things HAVE been invented but are suppressed by big companies ... the everlasting light bulb, fabric that doesn't wear out, etc etc.

Graphista · 24/01/2019 22:47

"I've long suspected that many wonderful things HAVE been invented but are suppressed by big companies ... the everlasting light bulb, fabric that doesn't wear out, etc etc" definitely!

Even stuff that USED to last and no longer does!!

My parents frequently comment how large household items are no longer built to last! My mum had the same washing machine for nearly 40 years including numerous house moves (which is meant to be bad for them! Dad was army hence all the moves), the same fridge freezer for 25 years, yet now we're (as consumers) considered unreasonable if we expect such items to last more than 5, max 10!

A poo hoover for dog walkers or cat owners or people with fox infested gardens. Sucks it straight into a nappy bag to be binned.

Windscreen wipers for glasses, I’m easily pleased

yep, an actual way to lose weight - when you consider how much 'science' there is and money spent on the weight loss industry, it's mind-boggling that there isn't something to help. I know 'eat less and move more' but those of us with things like arthritis find that really hard.

A better way to give birth.
A cure for colds/flu etc.

Basically, we seem to be really good at describing/knowing what is in the human body, but more than a bit pants at actually fixing things.

The ability to listen to economists who have a good idea of how to minimize global inequality, but instead more and more right-wing fascists are getting voted into power. What is wrong with us?

Resealable plastic packs like bacon ham cheese, which never “peel here” and get hacked with a knife.

Ditto coffee jars that peel off all in one go so you not drinking foil for weeks.

Curtains that self close on a tiny motor just push a button.

Light bulbs that beep when going break so you have time to replace.

A clever black hole type of bag that manages to suspend in some votex whatever junk you have to carry, but dosnt effect the weight.

Urine test that tells you how many days before period arrives for those who have irregular cycles or want to know if can wear light colours not black for two weeks “ just in case”

Very complicated but a pill that replicates the effect of deep sleep on the body.

HeyThoughIWalk · 25/01/2019 07:38

@Akire I'm fairly sure you can get motorised curtains.

In fact, quite a few things mentioned above are available, just really really expensive, or very cumbersome.

Chocrock · 25/01/2019 10:47

MirriVan I use Firefox / google

Teleportation would be amazing and solve a huge number of environmental issues regarding transport of goods (even if we couldn't get to the point of moving people).

Nanotechnology like in 80's sci-fi novels where any substance can be broken down to atomic/molecular level and reconstitued (again would solve the piles of trash and other pollution) plus 3d printing...

On a personal level - permanent body hair removal seems like it should be possible...

morningconstitutional2017 · 25/01/2019 13:00

A gentle but totally effective beauty fluid to put on your face which when wiped or pulled off just seconds later pulls out debris from open pores and closes them too.

I'd a premium pay for that.

Panticles · 25/01/2019 21:38

A Lego magnet. You switch on the current and it attracts all the Lego in the house. You hold it over a plastic crate and switch it off. All the Lego falls in!

Love some of these ideas! I just remembered another one - Amazon wish lists that actually work the way I need them to!

For example, I'd like to be able to set up a list that DH and I can collaborate on (eg for kids' birthdays), and then send to other people for them to buy from.

But currently I have 2 options: a list that only I can create, which I can share with other people so they can buy stuff; and a list that anyone can collaborate on, so when I share it, any of the recipients can add/remove things. I want something in between, where some people can add/remove stuff, and everyone else can just see it and buy things!

I could easily write the code for it myself, if they gave me access to do it; it's not hard!
