What do you think SHOULD have been invented by now?

Yet again, I set the Sky box to record a programme, it says it's done it, but when I go to watch it, all that's been recorded is half an hour of over-run news.

Surely we must by now have the technology for the Sky box to know that the previous programme has gone on longer than it was scheduled for, and to wait until the programme I want has actually started before recording?

Likewise, it shouldn't need to record 5 minutes at the start and end of everything.

Drives me nuts!

Does anyone else have any things that they think "We MUST be able to do that by now!"? I don't so much mean things that we wish had been invented, just things that we think should have been.

I'd love it if we could have a car that could turn into a plane, like in the Incredibles or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

camelfinger · 24/01/2019 20:16

Spray on tights that you could just wash off at the end of the day.
Regarding hair removal, something that you could pour in the bath and it would remove hair whilst you just lay in it.
A duvet that doesn’t need a cover.
A hole in the floor where you could sweep dirt into, and possibly water too so you don’t need a dustpan or a mop bucket.
Dishwashers with different designs of baskets and shelves rather than all the plate racks. I know these do exist but are far from widespread.

Mumberjack · 24/01/2019 20:19

A way to replenish screenwash/water from within the car.

DuggeesWoggle · 24/01/2019 20:29

This may actually out me as I say it so often and have been doing for years. Cars with wheels that can swivel 90 degrees so you can drive sideways into tight parking spaces - imagine how easy parallel parking would be!! We can put a man on the moon, why can't we do this?!

I had an ultrasound scan last week BackForGood and the gel wasn't cold!! I remember remarking on it. Not warm, just room temperature.

Abra1de · 24/01/2019 20:30

Instant wine cooler.

Akire · 24/01/2019 20:32

A scanning machine that can measure you for the perfect size bra in seconds. Can’t be that hard!!! We can measure millionth of an inch but have to try on 367 bras before find one vagley comfortable for our shape.

Abra1de · 24/01/2019 20:32

HeyThoughIWalk

You need a Ford!

notsurewhatshappening · 24/01/2019 20:37

A body double so I can do the best bits of everything but then swap places with 2nd me.
A charger for myself so I actually have energy!

Believeitornot · 24/01/2019 20:40

A plug in charger stand for TV/etc remote controls. Then I don’t have to mess about with batteries. Have a stand a bit like a baby monitor or cordless phone. Pop the remote on at the end of the day.
Charged the following day.

DuggeesWoggle · 24/01/2019 20:40

Yes HeyThoughIWalk we used to have a Golf that had a heated windscreen, it was amazing - cleared ice as quickly as the rear one. I think there was a tiny maze of wires through the glass rather than the big grid like on the rear. Shame we had to get rid but it was a company car and we now have a naff dad Skoda Angry

xWallToWallBastardsx · 24/01/2019 20:40

All banks to let you pay cheques in by text. Mine doesn't yet.

swapsicles · 24/01/2019 20:41

I think they already have dust suckers in hair salons so they can sweep the hair straight into it, bit like an electric dustpan!

Upsidedownfrown · 24/01/2019 20:45

Haven't read every reply so sorry if I'm not the 1st with this amazing idea!

A car with wheels that turn sideways so you just pull up next to a spot, turn wheels to the side and slide right into the spot.

Yes I know we have self parking cars but they still require some wiggle room. Imagine how much space could be saved if cars could just slot in neatly!

professionallurker · 24/01/2019 20:56

I really thought when I was a child that we would all travel around using jet packs by now. Hope it happens before I die!

DuggeesWoggle · 24/01/2019 21:23

Great minds UpsideDownFrown - scroll upthread a bit Grin

Sod the smart car, this would revolutionise urban driving!

A zip in pavements so that utilities can be mended without digging a hole

Bluelonerose · 24/01/2019 21:53

Oh I've just remembered years ago when I went to Butlins they had a big dryer in the changing room. You could easily fit 6 people in it paid £2 and it dries you. Grin

Angie169 · 24/01/2019 22:00

PP Heated coats gloves etv have been invented , I bought one of them for a friend a few years ago , he loves it ! www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Work-Gear/Heated-Gear

BelfastSmile · 24/01/2019 22:02

@MongerTruffle "The technology for that does exist. Back in the day of analogue TV, there would be a code embedded at the end of each programme. This meant that regional TV networks could provide local adverts."

Yes, I remember that now that you say it - wasn't there a code printed in the TV guide that you could type in to your recorder? This is my point - the technology exists, the need exists, but why doesn't the solution exist?!

Our local swimming pool has a big dryer that you step into. You can fit about 4 people in, and it costs £1/2 or so. It looks fun!

The laundry folding thing also exists, but I imagine it's too big and expensive to be practical!

"CAPITAL/lower case changer on computers - if you type in CAPS by mistake you can highlight the text and change to lower case, rather than having to delete and re-type."

This has been driving me nuts for YEARS! Surely its possible!

"Already exists - highlight the text and then hit shift +F3 together - this changes caps to lower, do it again, back to caps, do it again it capitalises the first letter of each word." Ok on computers - why no similar function for tablets & phones?

"I could run a car for MONTHS on my arse" 😂😂😂I could run one for YEARS on my belly!

"Front doors that unlock with a fob like cars do." Again already exist, even apps that'll do it but £££ to get the doors that do this. As more people get them I'm sure they'll become cheaper & more prevalent. My block of flats the close (street) door is like this and it's HA!

I think the problem with printers is by their nature they're largely limited to being mechanical rather than truly electronic. What we need is for society stopping depending on hard copies of things - which is happening gradually.

"A misogynist detector. With integral taser." Great idea unfortunately I think it'd be overworked in 5 minutes!

"A zip in pavements so that utilities can be mended without digging a hole" have you seen/heard of solar roadways? Panels of durable material that can be used for road surfaces while also storing solar energy, but because it's panels they're easily lifted for access to utilities and quickly and easily replaced including if they become damaged (so no pothole problem either) the same company has also developed solar paving I believe which would solve your problem.

Unfortunately big oil & their supporters are doing their damndest to prevent them succeeding. Sad

Teleportation. So DD1 and I can pop to see each other without a three hour drive.

MadeForThis · 24/01/2019 22:09

A magical cream that used once removed dark circles under your eyes. Cheap and pain free too.

PencereTencere · 24/01/2019 22:12

Sun protection injections. Would take seconds rather than so much effort of slathering on the SPF50.
