Weighted blankets

Has anyone bought a weighted blanket and if so do you think they're worth the money?
I'm really struggling with sleeping at the minute due to various health conditions and general stress and was wondering if they are worth the £150-£200

I defo sleep better with a heavy blanket but just get a couple from Dunelm! You don't need to spend £200!

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 23/01/2019 21:28

My friend got one for her Ds and swears it's worth its weight in gold. She'd tried everything (he's 10) and its the only thing that's helped him sleep.

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/01/2019 21:28

I've added a quilted very large throw that I fold over at the top and the weight (but not much extra heat) is lovely.

Interesting.. my daughter has a chronic illness and I’ve been looking at them.

What benefits do they give?

whatalifethisis · 23/01/2019 21:51

I have the Miran one too....I love it.
Humpty do you get yours to lie flat in the cover? I tried and gave up.

Geegee1970 · 23/01/2019 22:20

I made one for my hubby after watching a few online tutorials. He suffers with anxiety and other ailments, it was easy enough to do, the equipment easy to source and all in cost less than £50 for a double bed size. It has since been approved of by my niece who has autism so it must be ok. I wouldn't rush to spend big money but I have seen the instant benefit people get from them.

OlennasWimple · 23/01/2019 22:27

What is the instant benefit of them? Sorry if that's a dumb question...

PhoenixBuchanan · 23/01/2019 22:32

How are they different from putting multiple blankets or duvets on the bed? It's very cold where we are so we have many layers on us and I love the weight of it. Isn't this the same thing?

JellySlice · 24/01/2019 00:12

The night my 15yo ds slept with one, he slept 13h.

We have since bought him this one. He puts it on top of his regular blanket. When he uses the weighted blanket, ds sleeps solidly for up to 13 hours, whereas when he sleeps without it he has bad dreams or wakes in the night, and rarely sleeps longer than 6h.

Sleeping with the weighted blanket seems to allow ds to get the amount of sleep he actually needs.

There is no evidence that ds is autistic, though he certainly has traits.

I sometimes borrow it while ds is at work - it's ever so nice and relaxing to feel that pressure when resting.

My mother helped me to make one (I think she regretted it as it was a massive ballache to do!).
It’s wonderful! I feel so calm and sleepy under it.

nicoala1 · 24/01/2019 00:16

What do these weighted blankets do? Obviously the weight is a factor, but as others have said what's the difference between a high tog duvet topped with a quilt?

I am not saying for a moment that they don't work, but am curious as to HOW they work? Thanks.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 24/01/2019 00:20

I have a normal duvet and a really heavy blanket on top. I’ve no idea why or how but I sleep better when I can feel the heaviness of it.

DustyMaiden · 24/01/2019 00:21

These are excellent for small DC

If you're not sure, experiment with some cushions

TheMatriarch · 24/01/2019 00:22

I’m autistic.
When I’m overwhelmed or anxious I start to feel sort of floaty and jittery - ds (also autistic) describes it as skin being a force field that stops working and gravity isn’t working properly. The weight of the blanket makes you feel held in and safe.
Deep pressure massage can do the same thing.

RomanticFatigue · 24/01/2019 00:25

I love the idea of one but I get really hot in bed peri menopausal
Don't you get hot under them?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 24/01/2019 00:33

I am menopausal and get sudden hot flushes at night but I just throw it off for a while til the flush has gone away.

halfwitpicker · 24/01/2019 01:46

I do love the feeling of a load of blankets on top of me. Might look into these.

BradleyPooper · 24/01/2019 01:56

Love mine, had it for a year. Dd started to borrow it so bought her one last autumn. She tends to wake in the night and sleeps much better with it. I do find it too warm in the summer, but we live in a hot country.

purpleunicorns · 24/01/2019 07:01

I was looking at these ones here They're breathable so unlike lots of heavy blankets it shouldn't get too hot

My son has one (asd, poor sleeper understatement) and it has been great. Was about £90 from Etsy etsy.me/2R9NoF9
It definitely helps him a bit. And we picked the weight and pattern etc

SmilingButClueless · 24/01/2019 07:14

I’ve recently bought one from the company you linked to and it’s great. I chose the forest design without an additional cover so although it’s heavy, it’s not particularly warm (which I like). I haven’t tried actually sleeping under it, as my preferred sleeping position doesn’t really work with a weighted blanket, but use it when I feel stress etc building up and feel instantly more relaxed.
