I'm thinking of going in June but don't know anyone who's ever been there. I just like the idea, I don't know why! Has anyone been and would you recommend it?

Used to live there - general feeling is it's fine for a visit but that's probably enough🤣.

There are some lovely areas of Spain nearby maybe better staying there?

NigellasGuest · 23/01/2019 07:35

So you wouldn't recommend? Was thinking of a nice hotel for 3 or 4 nights. I've been to Spain, and like the idea of somewhere I've never been!

We have done a daytrip from Spain. It is a really interesting place but small and crowded. Great for a long weekend I suspect but can't imagine a whole holiday there. If you go from Spain, there are lots of car parks on the Spanish side of the border so you can park up for the day and walk across, avoiding queues. Who knows how daytrips will be effected by Brexit, though.

Hello,
I've just returned from a few days in Gibraltar with DH and 5 year old DD and enjoyed it. Nice food, very friendly people!! Any questions please ask!

frazzledmumoftwo · 24/02/2019 23:17

I did a week Day Skipper Sailing Course from there - but we sailed along the coast to Spain, and also briefly down to Morocco for one night.

I remember Gibraltar being nice, but very small - and lots of monkeys?

Singlenotsingle · 24/02/2019 23:23

I've been there twice. You can go up to the top of the rock and see the views. There's a cafe up there but watch out for the apes. I got mugged by one! You can see the caves or go shopping in their main Street. Or get a boat trip out to see the dolphins. There's pubs and cafes and the weather should be nice in June.

PenguinPandas · 24/02/2019 23:31

We went on a day trip there and enjoyed it - my son had an ape jump on his head - he was about 5 at the time and thought it amusing. It is quite small but 3 or 4 nights would be fine. We did the boat trip but didn't see dolphins and it was rough but rest of it was lovely. Think we went twice from Spain but it was 7 or so years ago now.

I found it a little odd wandering around with marks and Spencer’s and Brit pubs around. Not my idea of a holiday but fine for a visit as it’s weird like being in the UK but not! Monkeys are cool and getting the cable car and wandering to the cemetary. I would suggest you head to Spain and take a day trip to Gibraltar.....

caringcarer · 24/02/2019 23:43

It is nice, but you can do everything there is to do in 2 days as it is so small. I would not go for a week especially if you have to entertain children. Monkeys at top bit, caves at bottom, a few shops and a boat ride. Petrol was very cheap i recall.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/02/2019 07:03

I've been a few times as I have a friend who lives there.

Main Street isn't very nice, but there's lots of interesting historical stuff and the rock/caves/siege tunnels/cable car/monkeys etc are all worth seeing and will easily fill a day.

There's also a couple of beaches and tobacco and alcohol are very cheap in limited quantities.

I've always wanted to stay in the Ship Hotel but not done it yet.

Probably best to combine a day or two in Gib with similar in Spain if you're wanting to go for 3 or 4 days. There's loads of authentic small coastal towns down that way or the white villages of Gaucin, Casares or even a bit further afield you can get the train up into the mountains to somewhere like Ronda, or go west to Tarifa, Zahara sort of way.

singme · 25/02/2019 07:20

Would second Ronda as a great place to visit. Gaucin also lovely but not loads to do. Also went to Tarifa on this trip but was out of season- beaches west of there are lovely. Didn’t make it to Gibraltar though sorry! I’ve always wanted to go and weirdly I have recurring dreams about it...if it’s like my dreams it’s really good Grin

The apes were brilliant! They mainly left us alone as we had no bags with us but a poor elderly lady had a rucksack on and they made a beeline for her, trying to open it! We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and they honestly couldn't have done enough for us! So friendly

ZenNudist · 25/02/2019 08:34

Suggest fly to Gibraltar but get a car go to tarifa jerez and cadiz is absolutely lovely. If only staying one place make it Cadiz.

Think Gibraltar only ok to see monkeys. Food good all around there.

ZenNudist · 25/02/2019 08:35

Grom tarifa you can do day trip to Morocco

ZenNudist · 25/02/2019 08:35

Jerez go to Lustau or other bodega for sherry tasting. Town is very workaday. Sherry tour round 3 places in sherry triangle great.

Daisy1175 · 25/02/2019 08:40

I got married there last year, lovely for a couple of days but after we went into Spain for a holiday, 2-3 days was enough

susan82 · 25/02/2019 09:02

Agreed, on our 3rd day in Gibraltar we were getting a bit bored but for 2 days it was fab. Almeda wildlife park was lovely to visit with variety of animals. Now I've seen it I don't think I'd rush to go back but would love to go to Spain as never been before!

justasking111 · 25/02/2019 09:04

Stayed on the ship hotel. Noisy till 2 am music from bars and weddings every day. Never again. 3 day break was too long
