choked by snot (TMI warning)

I have like a curtain of mucus/catarrh/snot going down the back of my throat and oozing out of my nose. A few moments ago I literally was so blocked I couldn't breathe (v v scary, been happening for the last few says). I've been taking Piriteze and I've dabbed myself with olbas oil. Any suggestions? I have a Tesco delivery coming tomorrow and I have access to Amazon prime.

Further info, not sure if relevant but not to drip feed - have been to doctor who asked if I had had the flu shot, looked disbelieving when I said yes, told me to get lots of rest, drink honey and lemon and gave antibiotics (amoxycillin) for the crackle in my chest. I haven't had the energy to make the honey and lemon. So I'm using 'flu' when it isn't properly full blown flu but I feel flattened. And struggling to breathe through mucus at intervals. And coughing.

Seriously, any tips welcome.

Steam - hot shower or bath or even just a steam bowl

FaithInfinity · 22/01/2019 20:44

There is a virus that seems to be everywhere at the moment like this. Not flu but nearly as bad. I’m laid up too!

Re snot - steam is your friend! Head over a bowl of steam 4 times a day for 10 minutes. It’ll help you to loosen and clear the snot.

Flowers get well soon.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 22/01/2019 20:46

Third the steam suggestion.

Hope you feel better soon.

Rub vicks on your chest. I rediscovered it in my 30’s so now always use it. Along with this

fleshmarketclose · 22/01/2019 20:52

You need menthol crystals from Amazon, put a few in a bowl of steaming water put towel over head and inhale.

Youcouldbemysilversprings · 22/01/2019 20:54

The sudafed nasal spray for mucus, its amazing!!!!!

Lozz22 · 22/01/2019 20:55

Ugh I sympathise!! I've been choking on a shit load of snot for the last week and half now Envy I can't talk properly it's rank, I did have a bath tonight and that seemed to ease it slightly. We have some liquid menthol type stuff in the cupboard I put it in water the other day couldn't smell or breathe the vapour in I was that bunged up, I did nearly drink it thinking it was cough medicine then realised once I'd looked at how many spoonfuls to take it actually wasn't!! Mind you it might have burnt all the catarrh away. I'm tempted to buy fisherman friends but they taste vile

Youcouldbemysilversprings · 22/01/2019 20:56

This one, changed my life!

I had this from before Xmas to until a week ago. It is bloody awful. Hot showers with lots of steam really helped.

OrdinaryGirl · 22/01/2019 21:01

Just to add....If you're blowing your nose, STOP.

Just wipe gently as it comes out or you're on the fast train to sinusitisville. It took me 25 years to accept that my (retired nurse) mum was right on this one.

sackrifice · 22/01/2019 21:04

You need to take sudafed which stops the sinuses from producing the snot in the first place.

I feel your pain, i once had it so bad i peeled it from my nose and it came out in strips, and i could feel it at the back of my throat. Bright green it was, and like thick many layered paint.

OrdinaryGirl · 22/01/2019 21:04

Also, drink as much as you can (not alcohol obvs), and get some Floradix tablets off of Amazon. They are bloody magical.

Meckity1 · 22/01/2019 21:12

@sackrifice - night before last I was pulling it out from the back of my throat and it was coming out in ropes. It was not pretty.

Sudafed on order, vicks on order, more olbas oil on order, menthol crystals look sort of scary, but thinking hard about it. Off to sort out steam.

Really appreciate the advice and to know I am not alone in this lurgy. It is grim.

@OrdinaryGirl - floradix are iron tablets. Will they make a difference?

Normally I do the wipe thing with a runny nose, but I've been blowing in an attempt to get rid of the bunged up back log.

OP posts:
OrdinaryGirl · 22/01/2019 21:38

Yeah definitely stop blowing. Having a window open a crack will help too, especially at night-time - breathing cool air means the tiny blood vessels constrict back down which will lessen the feeling of blocked-ness. The less engorged the area can get, the better.

Floradix is very bio-available iron but has other B vitamins as well (have a look at the amazon reviews for people's experiences with it). I have no connection to the company but recommend the tablets all the time to friends and on here to people who are tired / burnt out / ill. Lots of my friends have come back to me to say they noticed a big difference after only a couple of weeks.

Hope you feel better soon. 💐

OrdinaryGirl · 22/01/2019 21:39

'B vitamins' not 'other B vitamins'. Sounds like I think iron is a B vitamin 🙄

Meckity1 · 22/01/2019 21:46

@OrdinaryGirl - thanks, I will look. I have more issues than Time magazine when it comes to my health, and that looks like something I can really use.

I've been having the window open during the day. I think it does help.

Dreading trying to sleep.

And I know I'm not really ill and it's just a bad cold, but darn, I'm fed up of the yeurk

CatsMother66 · 22/01/2019 21:59

I always find the lemon good. Juice of half a lemon in hot water with some honey and it cuts through the mucus which you can then cough/dredge up. Use in addition to the other suggestions. (Quite satisfying to cough it up!)

Meckity1 · 22/01/2019 22:15

@CatsMother66 - working my energy levels up to do just this. I think it's a week since I saw the doctor who told me to do this, but I'm still so flattened that it's a big deal putting the kettle on.

@OrdinaryGirl - Just a heads up - floradix isn't gluten free. Floravital is, however, and so I'm giving it a go.

OrdinaryGirl · 23/01/2019 08:50

How was your night chicken?

Blobby10 · 23/01/2019 09:42

Make your own honey and lemon - the honey acts as a natural antiseptic and will also soothe your throat. The lemon will break down the mucus. Add hot water (and whisky if you desire!) and its the perfect home remedy and much nicer than any artificial Lemsip style things. You can also adjust the proportion of honey to lemon depending on whats irritating you most!

Meckity1 · 23/01/2019 12:50

@OrdinaryGirl - thank you! I really appreciate the good wishes. It was slimy. Waiting for deliveries with the good stuff recommended on here.

@Blobby10 - I have honey, I have lemon juice, but I don't normally drink hot drinks and I'm still working up the energy to dig all the stuff out. There is a load of washing up and laundry that I'll need to prioritise. But I will get to it! Thank you.

Hope you start to feel better soon @Meckity1. I'm fighting something off right now and praying it doesn't come out til next week as I'm going away for the weekend and there are two parties involved!!

Musicalstatues · 23/01/2019 16:48

As per a pp, menthol crystals are truly amazing
