Walking the Camino

Does anyone have experience of the Camino de Santiago? I'd like to walk for up to a month staying in albergues if possible. I want to do it with just my partner and not plan ahead too much or book ahead. Spring or autumn. Is it realistic to be this spontaneous? Does anyone have any useful info or ideas for me? Many thanks.

My sister did it - all brilliant except for the bed bugs. They are a bit of a problem, she was bitten to shreds and had to be very careful she did not bring any home! I think her route was all planned out with a group, so I am not sure about spontaneity.

Thanks LePimpernel. I have bought a silk sleeping bag which some say keeps the bugs at bay a bit. Don't fancy being bitten. I know actual hotels are reasonably priced along the routes, and perhaps would be more likely free of bugs but just walking as long as we fancy and pitching up somewhere has a romantic appeal!
