If you're looking to buy, what would put you off the most?

Neither buying nor selling for a year or two, but I'm looking around to keep an eye on things and idly curious about what would put other people off.

For me, it would be a garden with no plants (just decking or paving, or that horrible astroturf stuff) or a house with only a shower, no bath (the kids love their baths!).

What are things that would put you off?

Busy road
No garden
Only bathroom downstairs

Petalflowers · 21/01/2019 19:32

Completely open planned living areas

Beams - pretty to look at but I find slightly claustrophobic, and often they are quite low

Walk into house straight into front room

Stairs in living room

Nnnnnineteen · 21/01/2019 19:33

Things that would cost me too much to get to how I want them. I wouldnt buy open plan as couldn't afford to change that, but cosmetic stuff is fine.

WatcherOfTheNight · 21/01/2019 19:34

Damp

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 21/01/2019 19:34

An arse hole neighbour.

sdaisy26 · 21/01/2019 19:35

No hallway (walking straight in to a room) from the front door.

Main bathroom downstairs. Also lack of bath.

Not enough storage.

Lack of character / period features. I would hate to live in a new build.

bonfireheart · 21/01/2019 19:35

Lack of hallway
No driveway
Small bathroom

SushiMonster · 21/01/2019 19:36

Theknacktoflying · 21/01/2019 19:38

no parking
a place where there are a lot of properties for sale

niceupthedance · 21/01/2019 19:39

Conservatory
No bath
Upvc windows

WhoNose88 · 21/01/2019 19:39

Agreed on the neighbour @Aprilshowersarecomingsoon - a good neighbour makes all the difference!

Damp / visible mould
Lack of storage or potential space for...
Tiny kitchens
No parking
Shared anything (garden / drive)
Blown double glazing
Grot in general
Dirty shower / grout
Musty smells
Dirty carpets

Racecardriver · 21/01/2019 19:43

Small rooms
Low ceilings
Open plan
Poor build quality
No parking
Not being walking distance to either school or station (both not possible for us)
Dark rooms that can’t be easily remedied

CallMeSirShotsFired · 21/01/2019 19:44

No off street parking for at least my household's cars + 1 or 2 extra.
No separate kitchen
No shower (you can stick your bathtubs!)
N or E facing garden
At least semi-detached, if not detached.
Dangerous road environment for my cat.

I mostly have all the positives/opposites of these in my current home and now can't imagine not having.

WhoNose88 · 21/01/2019 19:44

I hadn't even thought of a lot of these taking notes

Singlenotsingle · 21/01/2019 19:46

Downstairs bathroom
Lack of garden, or small garden
Facing a busy road
No double glazing

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/01/2019 19:46

Poor storage.
Stairs to upstairs from the living room.
Front door opening straight into living room.
Only one bathroom.
Poor quality DIY.
Mould around shower/bath.
Not being in a good school catchment.
No bathrooms upstairs.
Cramped bedrooms.
Nowhere to put a dining table.

GoldenBuns · 21/01/2019 19:50

Busy road/ road on bus route

A house that has been expensively renovated in a very 'strong' specific taste. For example, a very plush kitchen in garish colours.

A small kitchen.

Open plan - a family needs different options for living space downstairs - especially as the dc get older!

Location - lack of good amenities/schools.

lpchill · 21/01/2019 19:52

Think about what you can afford and what's in your budget. Some of the stuff that people have listed are great, but when your budget won't stretch that far or you want an area over the house then you need to see where you want to compromise.

I wanted a third bedroom and second toilet, but because it would mean to get them thing it would be in a not great area with terrible schools, we chose instead for a two bed mid terrace that's low maintenance and payment. We could always do a loft conversion to get the third bed and bathroom.

GoldenBuns · 21/01/2019 19:52

Also, watch out for barking dogs in the neighbouring houses!

VanillaSauce · 21/01/2019 19:54

If the current owners were to show me round. I like to look at the property without the sentimental bias and and anything can be changed.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/01/2019 19:55

No off street parking or a drive a long way from the house.

Neighbours who obviously don't care about their properties.

No downstairs loo.
