If you're looking to buy, what would put you off the most?

Neither buying nor selling for a year or two, but I'm looking around to keep an eye on things and idly curious about what would put other people off.

For me, it would be a garden with no plants (just decking or paving, or that horrible astroturf stuff) or a house with only a shower, no bath (the kids love their baths!).

What are things that would put you off?

No garden, no garage, no bath, tiny kitchen, unequal bedroom sizes for the kids ... we are keeping our eye out at the moment but also considering buying land where we plan to move to (about 30 miles away) if a suitable plot came up. I have so many red lines I'm not sure anywhere will meet my standards!

Kernowgal · 22/01/2019 08:17

No garden
Galley kitchen
On-street parking/permit parking
Downstairs loo
Scruffy house next door
Hot tub next door (noisy parties likely)

Harebellmeadow · 22/01/2019 08:19

Evidence of structural damage such as cracks. Damp. Mould.
Dodgy area. Murderers and druggies.

gamerwidow · 22/01/2019 08:25

On street parking
No room for a bath
Major structural work needed

I don’t care about style of decorating or kitchens/bathrooms those can be changed quite easily but holes in walls, broken flooring, rewiring needed and anything that means it’s not at a livable standard from day one is a no-no

GoldenBuns · 22/01/2019 08:27

Also, a house that's right up next to the pavement. Our present house has almost no front garden at all. If someone sneezes in the sittting room someone passing by outside can hear it all family arguments have to be carefully located at the back of the house.

Villanellesproudmum · 22/01/2019 08:31

No off street parking. Astro turf.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 22/01/2019 09:03

No dedicated parking.
I have 2 spaces behind my house just for us. It's bliss.
I'm my old flat I used to have to park streets away with a disabled child and a weeks shop in the rain. It was utterly soul destroying.

slappinthebass · 22/01/2019 09:05

Damp
Brown PVC windows
Cigarette smell
I love Victorian houses and hate when I see them with painted brick work or worse, pebbledash. I'd accept painted bricks/pebbledash on some other types of house though.
I can't think of anything else. I've managed with living by a school, no drive, by an A road, somewhere noisy etc over the years and get used to that.

Clutterfreeintraining · 22/01/2019 13:47

Hmm, I think my house has ticked almost every one of the negatives on people's lists Grin

Downstairs bathroom,
No parking,
Front door opens into living room,
Stairs also in living room,
No front garden (walk out onto the pavement),
Busy road,
No boundary between mine and neighbour's garden,
Near a big secondary school,
Walk through one room to get to a bedroom,
And when I get around to replacing it, the bathroom will become a shower room.

The only one from that list that slightly bothers me is not being able to park outside my house (park on the other side of the busy road). One day, when I've managed to buy next door's garden, I'd like to create parking at the back.

Titsywoo · 22/01/2019 17:57

No off street parking
Small rooms and no potential to extend
Only one toilet and no space for another
Sloped garden
Heavy clay soil (I have this now and it's the only thing I really dislike about my house)
Ugly street (neighbours with skips everywhere, rubbish etc)

We bought our current house and it had lots of things I disliked but had the most potential so we've added extensions and refurbished the whole place over the last 5 years so not much puts me off apart from the things that can't ever be changed.

evenbetter · 22/01/2019 20:57

God yeah, neighbouring trampolines-we’d look in person or google street view first and if there’s signs of garden screaming nearby there wouldn’t be a viewing booked at all. See also-hot tubs/garden tat like swings climbing sets etc etc.

MarshaBradyo · 22/01/2019 21:00

No sun in the garden in the early evening in summer
Dark inside

digitallyremastered · 22/01/2019 21:22

The six bed semi would have balanced accommodation downstairs. Anyone still find it just too many bedrooms or the more the merrier?

Hate not having a cloakroom and somewhere for wet coats and shoes to dry e.g. An airing cupboard.

brick15 · 22/01/2019 21:39

Shared anything (drive etc)
Near a river
Downstairs bathroom
Front door into living area
No clear boundaries e. Fences
Dodgy looking houses next door e.g. unkempt
No drive or off road parking
Long set of steps up to the front door
On a steep hill
On a corner
Pebbledashed

Aaaahfuck · 22/01/2019 21:48

I feel like a lot of these are just actually meaning people don't want small or cheaper houses. For example a small house is much more likely to just have one bathroom upstairs, a small garden or yard, no off street parking and an overlooked garden. My perfectly lovely terrace has all of these things because it was 100k not 300k.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/01/2019 21:51

Main road.

Scruffy appearance of neighbouring houses.

Only 1 bathroom.

North or east facing garden.

digitallyremastered · 22/01/2019 21:54

On a corner for me too - really don't like the idea somehow.

VenusClapTrap · 22/01/2019 22:10

Not necessarily Aaaahfuck. I have seen plenty of £1m+ houses with small gardens, no off street parking and overlooked gardens. I’m not talking about London either.

cafesociety · 22/01/2019 22:57

No off road parking
No garden or gardens on a slope
Conservatory...hate them, take up a chunk of garden
Cul de sac
Artex/patterned ceilings
Evidence of nuisance neighbours...rusty cars, disgusting front garden
Hearing dogs barking a lot in neighbouring properties/gardens
Not on a corner
A lot of steps up to the front door
East facing back garden

GunpowderGelatine · 23/01/2019 00:41

No toilet or bathroom upstairs would be a deal breaker.

Also, no garden, no off street parking and living near a river would put me off

SpringForEver · 23/01/2019 00:55

No bath
Only one bath or shower room
No downstairs toilet
No garden
Decking/gravel and no lawn
Front garden that is just grass up to the pavement with no wall
Burnt out cars in the area, car repairs in the area
Feral children/teens hanging about
Leaking roof
Noise of any kind
Pub very close
Cul de Sac
Park, fields or playing fields at the back, risk of burglary or development
No garage
Mould

MadisonAvenue · 23/01/2019 01:00

A shared drive.

We were young when we bought our previous house and didn't give the shared drive much thought, I wish we'd listened to my father in law who tried to warn us off it. It wasn't a problem though until next door was sold a couple of years later and a complete arsehole moved in who caused us no end of problems and upset over the drive.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 23/01/2019 16:57

Shared drive/ no drive
No utility room
Completely open plan - love a big kitchen dinner but like a living room separate.
Only one loo
Down stairs bathroom
Massive en-suite at the cost of a descant size third or fourth bedroom- really don't get the love for en-suites. They're nice if they have been properly planned for but not when they have been shoe horned in.
Small garden
No study - I sew and need space to be set up permanently not lumping the machine out on the kitchen table.

Davros · 25/01/2019 15:22

No off street parking is OK if you live in a controlled zone. Parking wardens and the cost of permits sorts out the CFs and we can get cheap visitor permits. It works well, it was a nightmare before though

blueskiesandforests · 25/01/2019 15:29

Parking issues and mould would both be deal breakers.

So would all ensuites and no family bathroom though - more so when children were younger. I actually find ensuites can be a bit unpleasant - smelly bedrooms, poor ventilation etc.

Downstairs toilet is important.

Utility/ cloakroom very nice to have. I don't like washing machines in the kitchen and would want room for one in a big family bathroom if no utility.
