If you're looking to buy, what would put you off the most?

Neither buying nor selling for a year or two, but I'm looking around to keep an eye on things and idly curious about what would put other people off.

For me, it would be a garden with no plants (just decking or paving, or that horrible astroturf stuff) or a house with only a shower, no bath (the kids love their baths!).

What are things that would put you off?

No vestibule.
No downstairs loo.
Ensuites.

But mainly, more than anything else, fitted fucking kitchen. Loathsome.

Dodgy looking houses next door e.g. unkempt

Connecting bedrooms without a corridor (i.e. having to walk through one room to get to another).

DrCoconut · 25/01/2019 17:02

I've lived in terraces or flats for the last 34 years so am completely used to one bathroom and it being on the ground or only floor. Likewise not having a drive, garage, big garden etc, it's all normal to me. I'd hate very small bedrooms or anything structural in need of repair.

Ronsters · 25/01/2019 17:13

Shared drives, dormer roof (Had one that leaked for years, despite multiple builders trying to fix it), busy roads, lots of cars parked close together. Pylons very close to house.

AlwaysSomethingThere · 18/02/2019 19:29

Why do you all hate conservatories lol?

BackforGood · 18/02/2019 20:08

So much of this depends on
a) where you are on the property ladder
b) what 'everything' is like in your town / area
c) things you've missed in / hated in your current house.

Now (decades in to property ownership) I wouldn't consider all sorts of things that I was quite happy to live with in my first home.
My db's house in a different town / County, cost about 3x what ours did, but 'parking' just doesn't really exist in their town, whereas if I were buying here, I wouldn't (now) look at a house that doesn't have good parking for 3 or 4 cars. That didn't come in to it when we bought this house though, as then we were a 1 car household and it never crossed out mind.
I think every house is a compromise too. We've loved living where we do for nearly 20 years (only house the dc remember) because we have loads of space and the location is so convenient for everything. We could only afford it as it is on a busy road and it has a trainline at the end of the garden. We know that put a lot of people off, but the positives have far outweighed the negatives for us with a growing family. Had this been in a 'quiet' spot, it would have been tens upon tens of thousands more and well out of our reach.
I've got loads of things on my 'cons' list, but everything is balance.

Neighbours

icelollycraving · 18/02/2019 20:36

Shitty neighbours with loads of crap outside their house (scrap cars etc)
Stench of strong dog/cat wee- it can involve ripping up carpets, underlay and sometimes floorboards.
Pest control van outside Grin
Noisy neighbours
Not enough natural light
Decor etc doesn’t bother me. Saying that I’ve bought new builds so it’s all been fresh.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/03/2019 14:45

No parking
No downstairs loo
No garage (but obviously this would be dependent on budget)

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/03/2019 15:03

Busy road

A front door that opens straight into the living room with no hallway (lived in a house like this for years and hated it)

nowhere to put a wardrobe

Palominoo · 18/03/2019 15:11

Old property.

Overlooked.

No garage or driveway.

Funny heating such as storage heaters.

Cesspit.

High maintenance Gardens.

No frontage, I. E front door opens on to the road.

On a main road.

On a flood plain.

Near a Mosque. I don't want to hear the call to prayer.

Backing on to a school or playing fielda/Park.

Backing on to a railway line.

Under a flightpath of a busy airport.

Palominoo · 18/03/2019 15:12

Those are what I avoid ^

Toddlerteaplease · 18/03/2019 15:12

Old boiler
No off street parking
Completely open plan

Bomato · 18/03/2019 15:15

Downstairs bathroom, galley kitchen, busy main road, tiny garden, bad parking on road, dodgy looking neighbours.

Bomato · 18/03/2019 15:16

Also front door opens straight into living room.

Bomato · 18/03/2019 15:16

And shower only! Must have a bath.

Bomato · 18/03/2019 15:17

Lack of natural light, too.

ArtichokeAardvark · 18/03/2019 15:20

I'm looking to buy at the moment and these are my turn offs:

Only one loo - one bathroom is ok, but there must be another loo.
Thatched roof - they look gorgeous but I can't afford £30+k every 5-10 years to rethatch.
Walk through bedrooms.
Small or galley kitchen.
New build.

morningstress · 18/03/2019 15:28

No garden, or a messy garden that I'll have to redo, sort out and put secure fences in.

Only 1 bathroom would annoy me.

Tiny rooms that look big in the photos but are actually minuscule.

A gross kitchen that I'd have to redo.

I hate when we view properties that literally look like a shithole but could be nice if the people gave a shit and made their place clean and nice.

Palominoo · 18/03/2019 15:34

Also

Big conifers on the property or neighboring properties.

Near a pub where patrons could stagger past on their way home.

I forgot my most hated feature. Ivy. Ivy or any plant growing up walls. Shudder.

ALongHardWinter · 18/03/2019 15:46

No window in the bathroom would put me off. And noisy neighbours!

RuthW · 18/03/2019 15:52

No downstairs loo. Bathroom downstairs is fine

Big garden

Smells of dog

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 18/03/2019 16:01

More than 10 minutes walk from tube (London)

Reliant on one tube line (no train line backup)

More than 20 mins from Central London on tube

Can't afford to be fussy about much else tbh!

HarryDaylight · 18/03/2019 16:03

Location: on a busy road? Forget it. Never again will I live on a main road.
Horrible areshole neighbours with anti social behaviour: been there, bought the tee shirt, never again. NEVER EVER.
In a housing estate miles from local shops, cafes and tube stops: Fuck no.
Small rooms, low ceilings, damp smells, no garden? Nope.
