What is going on? Two controlled explosions this afternoon reported Sad

I think there is one obvious route of speculation

BifsWif · 21/01/2019 15:42

Well yes, my ‘what’s going on’ comment was stupid in hindsight. I had just spoken with a friend in Derry and wasn’t thinking.

I hope this isn’t a return to how things were.

Is Brexit to blame? It was it always a matter of time?

ShatnersWig · 21/01/2019 15:49

There was talk this morning in some media circles that Mrs May was looking at REWRITING the Good Friday Agreement to get her Brexit deal through.

I could imagine certain people being rather unhappy about that and making one or two demonstrations as to why that would be a seriously fucking stupid move.

I may be wrong, but I'd say it's a strong likelihood.

Mrsemcgregor · 21/01/2019 15:55

If May screws over the Good Friday agreement for her Brexit deal then I can see the shit hitting the fan. Sad

WTF? How low can she go?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 21/01/2019 15:58

Annnnnd there’s barely a peep about it on the UK-wide media.

The reports of the car bomb outside the courts was lurking halfway down the Daily Mail website like a story of minor interest, whereas reports of Prince Philip driving w/out a seatbelt was headline news.

Somerville · 21/01/2019 16:00

Yes, Brexit is to blame. Or more specifically the undermining of the GFA and ongoing risk to it because of Brexit.

Two vans were hijacked in Creggan, a day and a half after the car bomb. Bad old days again. It wasn't inevitable and we need to put peace first.

ShatnersWig · 21/01/2019 16:03

Let's be honest. Whatever anyone thinks about Brexit, not one fucker gave any real thought to what the referendum might mean with regard to Ireland. Certainly not Farage and certainly not Cameron.

Somerville · 21/01/2019 16:04

May confirmed in HoC just now that she isn't planning on trying to rewrite the GFA. But those rumours came from somewhere. I think to start undermining it, so that after no-deal when GFA is in tatters Brexiteers can say 'well it wasn't fit for purpose anyway - Ireland wouldn't even renegotiate it for these new, modern, times where we reimpose borders and clamp down on human rights' Angry

Absolutely- and whenever anyone tried to raise the question of the border they were flapped away like an annoying fly.

It was obviously assumed that Ireland would capitulate and take whatever “solutions” suggested by Westminster lying down.

It's the same old colonialist bullshit that got us into this mess in the first place. A history of warmongering and oppression is nothing to be proud about but, evidently, Farage and co are.

Yes, this! Jesus Christ. AND neither the main BBC News at Ten last night or Radio 4 this morning made the overwhelmingly obvious connection between the bomb and Brexit threatening the GFA.

I haven't seen a newspaper today yet, but seriously? Obviously it's a minor issue, or just another instance of 'Ireland holding up the Great and Glorious Progress of Brexit'. Hmm

Mrsemcgregor · 21/01/2019 16:37

Hopefully she can’t amend the GFA even if she wanted to, it’s a UN agreed treaty isn’t it?

Politics at its absolute lowest going on.

LellowYorry · 21/01/2019 16:44

I suspect this is all about informing younger and reminding older Tories why the GFA is in place. I expect something similar to also happen in London at some point too.

May has now claimed she has no plans to change the Belfast/GFA. Reports were that part of plan B is to change both the backstop and GFA.

I am very sad for the people of Derry, they don't deserve any of this.

Mrskeats · 21/01/2019 16:46

Literally the most unsurprising news ever.
Hope leave voters are happy now.

BifsWif · 21/01/2019 18:36

Me too Lelly.

I wonder was this a back pedal after someone helpfully pointed out that you can’t just unilaterally amend a peace treaty between two countries when some of the terms just don’t really suit you any more.

Whatisthisworldcomingtoo · 21/01/2019 20:28

Disgusting of May to compromise the peace we have worked hard for in Northern Ireland.

ItsMEhooray · 21/01/2019 20:30

Yep, Brexit. I'll be amazed if London isn't a target before long.

PerkingFaintly · 21/01/2019 20:37

Oh god, more today? I so hoped this thread would be old and somehow about the car bomb.

Greensleeves · 21/01/2019 20:39

There's a third alert now (the third today). Abandoned van blocking the road outside a school.

Greensleeves · 21/01/2019 20:42

Also PSNI reporting road closures in N Belfast after discovery of a suspicious object

summertimehere · 21/01/2019 20:45
