Could my boyfriend wear this to the evening of a wedding

I have been invited to the whole day, he has been invited to the evening only, the wedding is a week on Friday and so it will be cold! Boyfriend has said he was thinking of wearing smart trousers and shoes and a black thin knit polo neck jumper. Is this too casual for the evening part of a wedding? He argued that as he is coming straight from work (a one hour train and then a one hour drive) a shirt would be creased by the time he arrived...

Sounds OK to me - I guess you are best placed to judge how laid back the wedding hosts will be, but it sounds smart enough to me

TokyoSushi · 21/01/2019 13:36

If it's for the evening and a 'standard' wedding, not black tie etc then I'd think he would be fine although perhaps slightly underdressed.

Yes a polo neck jumper is too casual. Loads of people wear shirts for travelling and manage to look perfectly presentable afterwards, so the journey is a weird excuse IMO

He would wear a suit jacket over the jumper, the wedding is in a marquee, not sure how formal other guests are going but I have a midi dress and fur coat because a marquee on the first day of Feb sounds cold to me

Why can't he travel for an hour in a shirt?

LoniceraJaponica · 21/01/2019 13:42

I think the jumper is because it is in a marquee. I think it is fine BTW. Any one who cooses to have a wedding in February in a marquee would understand that the guests would dress accordingly.

If they are having it in a marquee they can’t exoect perfect etiquette from their guests.

OlennasWimple · 21/01/2019 14:00

By the evening the marquee will probably be sweaty and humid and he will be unpleasantly hot in a jumper with no option to take it off

RomaineCalm · 21/01/2019 14:01

I think it sounds fine for an evening do (albeit he may get a few people asking where his box of Milk Tray is Wink)

Is he the Milk Tray man?

BrokenWing · 21/01/2019 23:03

Don't like the look at all, agree it's very 1970 knitting catalogue, especially if he tucks it into his trousers!

RoseAndRose · 21/01/2019 23:06

Unless there is a malfunction, the marquee won't be cold!

Quite the opposite IME.

BackforGood · 21/01/2019 23:21

I was thinking 1970s Milk Tray too Grin

I'd say he'll probably be underdressed but by that time of the day, nobody will be too bothered.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 21/01/2019 23:27

I think it’s too casual but I’ve just shown dh, he thinks it’s fine. (Dh and I always disagree with male wedding attire)

elasticfantastic · 21/01/2019 23:36

So long as he's not wearing jeans with it I think for an evening do he will look perfectly fine. I think polo necks look pretty smart on blokes anyway! (To confirm we are talking polo neck and not polo shirt?! Because polo shirt would be a massive No!!)

hihellohihey · 23/01/2019 13:47

I have no idea about the milk tray man, think that was before my time! Grin

Milk Tray Man

GypsyRoseTea · 23/01/2019 22:36

Well who cares what he wears with a face like that? Grin

MorningsEleven · 23/01/2019 22:37

hihellohihey

He was basically some creepy wee stalker who'd break into your bedroom in his polo neck and leave you a box of shite chocolates. The 70s were very strange times.

Miane · 23/01/2019 22:38

He needs to wear a suit and tie and a coat if it’s cold.

mumsastudent · 23/01/2019 22:40
