1st Birthday party food

DC is coming up to their 1st birthday soon and we're having a party at a local hall. Kids will range in age from 10 months to 8 years, average age bracket is 1-3.

Anyway, what sort of food did you have or would expect to see? My mum made hmmm noises down the phone when I mentioned crudites and hummus (It's happening anyway) and mentioned jam sandwiches.

I think the judge police would be out in force if I did that! I was thinking:

Cheese sandwiches
Crudites and dips
Sausage rolls
Quiche
Wotisits and Naice crisps for grownups
Birthday cake!

Ideally I'd like another sandwich filling but can't think what.

Ham sandwiches.
Grapes, cut in half.
Cherry tomatoes, cut in half.
Mixed berries.
Bread sticks.

Salad sandwiches go down a treat.

Mix chopped tomatoes, scallions finely chopped and lettuce with mayonnaise (I tend to use full fat) - salt for flavour.
Butter the bread.
Never one left. Honestly, they're eaten like they're going out of fashion (which they probably are).
Ham and tomato.
Egg mayonnaise with chives or scallions.
Roast a piece of beef the day before and slice that thinly for sandwiches either.
Roast a chicken and make sandwiches from that.
Just ham can go down a treat too (if it's naice ham).

Ok, so my dc are 7 and 10, so my view on 1st birthday party food may be a little out of date.

No one eats hummus at parties IME.

Standard fare seems to be
Cucumber abd carrot sticks
Grapes
Ham sandwhiches
Cheese spread sandwhiches
Crisps
Party rings
Cocktail sausages
Egg Mayo sanwhiches always go down a storm if you can be bothered to make them

Agree with bikerunski* maybe pizzas too.

stinkypoo · 20/01/2019 23:14

And chocolate fingers.
Ham/cheese/egg sandwiches
Little sausages
Pizza
Cucumber & carrot sticks
Grapes, orange slices
Crisps
Cheese & pineapple on sticks
Cherry tomatoes

Christmasfairy07 · 20/01/2019 23:18

What are scallions?

Notgotajarofglue · 20/01/2019 23:21

Spring onions! Grin

Absolutely NO grapes for the 1-3 set. Grapes are the perfect choking hazard (as are cherry tomatoes) And cut in half is still the perfect size to lodge in a trachea. They're also soft enough that coughing and back slaps don't tend to dislodge them.

Sandwiches, crisps, cake, finger food for babies.

I have a 2 year old. At one year, cheese sandwiches, toddler snack type crisps, small yogurt, cucumber and carrot sticks, yes to hummus or anything else he could dip in, cut up berries and grapes. Now cheese or tuna sandwiches, mini sausages, pizza slices, Pom bears, cut up fruit of any kind, cake, biscuits -I’ve relaxed a lot!
That said the party food he likes best is Nigerian style - DS surprised a friend of mine by devouring jolof rice (made fairly mild for the Brit’s!), chicken drumsticks and fried fish at he dines first birthday party - she’d laid on more typically British party food too.

I think your list is fine. I would scrap the wotsits in favour for skips or Pom bears though... stain free and far less smellier!

For my DS party, I made individual pack ups, although these were all age 0-3. DM and MIL took requests from parents for sandwiches, which were either ham, cheese spread or marmite.
The rest of their bag had Pom bears, Barney bear, banana and a squeezy yougurt pouch.
I then made a huge bowl of fruit salad for them to help themselves to.

I would have the same selection for you age group, but would add carrot battons, cucumber sticks, chopped peppers, hummus, pizza slices and sausage rolls.

stinkypoo cheese and pineapple on sticks? I wouldn't be having cocktail sticks at a toddler party.

NickMyLipple · 21/01/2019 07:23

My daughter is nearly one and her favourite sandwhich filling is egg mayonnaise!

KindergartenKop · 21/01/2019 11:04

I've found the kids round here love jam sandwiches. Egg always gets ignored.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 21/01/2019 11:15

For that age we do- big bowl of pesto pasta
Lots of pizzas cut up
