Who is Marius again in Les Mis?

The little boy with the grumpy grandfather, I know, but who was the father/mother?

His father was the colonel Thenardier tried to steal from on the battlefield. I think his mother died in childbirth.

His father was a colonel in Napoleon's army. Hence the falling out with his father, Marius's grandfather. The grandfather threatened to disinherit Marius if he contacted his son, I think.

My first thought was that the grown up Marius is Lawrence Durrell!
