Science Museums in the UK

Which is your favourite?

We really like We The Curious In Bristol and have had Techniquest in Cardiff recommended to us. Leicester Space Centre could have been good but was so busy (it was half term) we couldn't really access a lot of the interactive exhibits.

I want to plan some more weekends away and would like to try and visit places with good museums for the kids so would love any tips.

Thinktank in Birmingham is great!

TheWomanin12B · 20/01/2019 16:24

We really enjoyed Birmingham. (Thinktank). The Science Garden was particularly great.

Dynamic earth in Edinburgh is good.

Glasgow science centre ( home of Nina and the Neurons!) is fab - can’t remember the proper name for it though.
At the other end of the country, Herstmonceux science centre and observatory is wonderful. Go on a nice day when the kids can play in the outside area

W5 in Belfast is brilliant. So much for kids of all ages.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 20/01/2019 16:28

Glasgow is great, you've also got the transport museum and lots of art galleries - it's a fab place for a weekend trip with DCs.

PotteringAlong · 20/01/2019 16:28

Centre for life in Newcastle

QuickWash · 20/01/2019 17:03

Fab, these are great, thank you!

Winchester science centre and planetarium is great.

spiderlight · 20/01/2019 17:05

Techniquest is brilliant! It's also right in Cardiff Bay so there are plenty of nice places to eat while you're there and you could combine it with a show at the Millennium Centre.

We're going to Dublin next weekend and had Explorium recommended on another thread. It might be tricky to get to from central Dublin without a car but if we manage it I shall report back!

We The Curious is the best of the ones I’ve been to. Dc’s will stay there all day fiddling about with stuff

QuickWash · 20/01/2019 17:12

It's quite hard to glean what's actually at these places from their websites sometimes!

Abweekend in Cardiff sounds fab!

Winchester.

museumum · 20/01/2019 17:13

Glasgow is good. And Life in Newcastle. we the curious in Bristol and for younger kids Eureka in Halifax but it’s more of a “children’s museum” than a science centre.
The science garden outside at thinktank is great.

starlingsintheslipstream · 20/01/2019 17:17

As well as lots of the others mentioned here, my kids enjoyed Enginiuity at Ironbridge. The passport they do for all the museums is really good value.

We've been to Eureka and absolutely loved it! We went in the school holidays and they had loads of extra activities on - would highly recommend but agree, it's maybe for younger visitors.

We the curious is fantastic , we all loved it , in fact dp and I probably enjoyed it more than ds. Saying that ds has asked to go again, I can't wait Grin
Really want to try eureka though.

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/01/2019 17:40

Not a science museum as such but Jodrell Bank is well worth a visit (even just for the cafe!)

iklboo · 20/01/2019 17:42

Spaceport in Merseyside is a good day out too.

greathat · 20/01/2019 17:51

We liked eureka, techniquest, think tank, dynamic earth. Take a trip to Barcelona too :) there's a good one there :)

Puppatude · 20/01/2019 18:41

Magna, near Sheffield.

We spent a very pleasant day there (but it's in an old iron foundary, so wrap up warm in winter!) whilst kiddo played will all sort of science things.

Including a fire vortex. :)

Ooh, if you come to Cardiff, do the Big Pit!

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 21/01/2019 19:46

We love the Think Tank, and the science garden is their favourite bit, and after a certain time that then becomes free, so we go there a lot.

SassitudeandSparkle · 21/01/2019 19:50

ThinkTank is good but busy especially at half-terms.
