When did you dye your hair?

Bit personal but what age was you when you dyed your hair and why? I've got quite nice brown colour hair but the greys are starting to really show and I'm starting to feel like I need to dye my hair but not sure, I'm 31 and never dyed it before xx

Started going white at 32. Nearly 12 years later and I haven’t dyed it yet.

I quite like the silver threads amongst the black. And I can’t stand highlighted hair.

kaytee87 · 20/01/2019 12:42

Started getting highlights as an older teen/early 20s.

PristineCondition · 20/01/2019 12:45

Started going grey at 20, started dying the day after

Stopped dying at 30. My hair was trashed, I was dying every month and greys were still showing through, my hair was breaking off.
It’s been three years and my hairs all natural now, it’s dark brown - 30/40 % grey.
It’s really marmite on others opinion of it but I like it

I've literally got 4-5 strands of grey it really notices if I have my hair down, but agree if you dye it you lose the soft nice hair not sure what to do xx

Started dyeing my hair at 13.
Now 35 and have just started dyeing it again after around a two year break, which is probably the longest I've gone.

Couldn't care less about the grey hairs, just like changing the way I look.

DustyMaiden · 20/01/2019 12:50

I was 50 and consider my self lucky. My DF was 76

People comment on how soft my hair is. Not sure why you think hair wouldn't be soft if it was dyed. It just needs to looked after with a good conditioner and a regular trim.

kaytee87 · 20/01/2019 12:55

Oh and obviously don't dye it yourself.

Zoeputthatdown · 20/01/2019 12:55

From about 15, I thought it was mousy. About a year ago I thought why am I still doing this and decided to start owning the grey. I didn't want to go short so am doing it gradually and the change in texture is already noticeable.

45 & rocking my white streaks.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 20/01/2019 12:56

About 13-33. When I went back to work after mat leave I stopped. I hadn't got time to keep it up, so it looked worse than silver streaks.

iklboo · 20/01/2019 12:57

Started using Toners & Shaders from 13, moved onto proper hair dye at 15. I've not had my natural hair colour since (I'm 50 this year).

Happyelfjokeday · 20/01/2019 13:00

33 (last year) when I decided the grey/white strands were too much! Have just gone for similar shade to my own. Expensive habit to have to get into though! (Don’t trust myself to do it properly at home)

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 20/01/2019 13:25
  1. My mum is a hairdresser and she decided I'd look great with highlights, she then proceeded to ruin hair up so had to dye the whole head Grin Haven't had my natural colour since
LardLizard · 20/01/2019 14:12

To People that have dyed their hair so young say at 10 etc or form teens do you regret it ? Because surely you’ve never relaly had time as an adult to have your own natura colour before it turned grey ?!

kaytee87 · 20/01/2019 14:24

@LardLizard I'm only 31, no greys yet. I only get highlights rather than all over colour, don't regret it. I had it dyed to my natural colour once and didn't like it, it was a mousey blonde/brown colour. It's much nicer with highlights.

MorningsEleven · 20/01/2019 14:26

Fifteen (30 something years ago) . I discovered Sun In. No idea what my natural hair colour is now.

witherwings · 20/01/2019 14:30

On and off since I was in my late teens (40s now). It's dark brown and have bleached it, had highlights, weird colours like red & purple. Now i use the dye that has davina on the box to cover a few greys. It's really easy and my hair is in great condition.

BaconPringles · 20/01/2019 14:31

Don’t recall ever stopping

explodingkitten · 20/01/2019 14:33

I don't dye it because I'm not grey yet. I'm 39 and hoping and praying that I won't go grey for a while. I'm so bad at keeping up regular maintenance concerning my looks. Don't like to spend the time on it. I have boring mouse brown hair.

Babdoc · 20/01/2019 14:35

Never, and I’m in my 60’s. My natural colour went from brown to a rather nice silver, which I’m happy with. As a doctor, it was an advantage to look more senior and experienced- patients tend to trust you more readily!

Zoeputthatdown · 20/01/2019 14:38

LardLizard I eased up on colour when I was pregnant and it confirmed that my natural shade was no great shakes.

Sadik · 20/01/2019 14:44

On or off since I was 14/15. Now 49, and still dye it more often than not. I have very short hair, so I can have a colour & it be gone in a few months.

To someone who asked upthread do I regret it - not at all. I've had it 'natural' coloured at some times in my life (mainly when pregnant/breastfeeding/small child). But I love having it coloured - I don't like wearing makeup & have an outdoors job so beat-up hands & usually wearing workwear or overalls much of the week. A good haircut & a change of colour is such a low-effort way to feel like I look a bit 'cared-for'

Sadik · 20/01/2019 14:46

Over the years I've had white blond highlights, purple streaks, pillarbox red, henna copper. These days I have a base golden/copper with lighter gold streaks through it. I always choose colours that don't look 'natural', but my current look is definitely softer than in the past.
