When did you dye your hair?

Bit personal but what age was you when you dyed your hair and why? I've got quite nice brown colour hair but the greys are starting to really show and I'm starting to feel like I need to dye my hair but not sure, I'm 31 and never dyed it before xx

About age 16 and done so intermittently since. I've never dyed it to cover the greys but dye it because I prefer it to my natural colour - I'll be doing it today. Maybe I would if I had a few more grey hairs but I only have a few by my ears (I'm in my early 50s)

GalacticChickenShit · 20/01/2019 15:04

@LardLizard regret? What regrets would be valid about not living with your natural adult hair colour?

EnidButton · 20/01/2019 16:08

14 because it was fun. I used to get those wella mousses for £1.50.

I got my first grey hair (literally one single strand of hair) in my mid 20's but that's never been my motivation for dying it. It might be in the future but for now it's just because I prefer the colour to my natural one. I'm starting to get more grey now in my parting and temples. (Though they're bright white not grey)

My hair is mid brown and I get it dyed dark brown so not that different. I also like the shine it gives.

If you're concerned about condition, get it professionally done somewhere that does Olaplex treatment. Also go for a semi permanent rather than permanent as it won't cause build up and is easier to change if you don't like it. It also fades really nicely rather than growing out and leaving obvious lines where your roots are.

Read up about colour levels/shades and what numbers they are before you go. That's really useful when exposing how light or dark you want to go. 0 is pitch black and 10 is white platinum blonde. The lower the first number the darker it is. You don't have to remember it all but having a basic understanding saves ending up too dark in my experience anyway.

When did you dye your hair?

God, sorry for multiple posts Blush That chart is just an example. The hairdressers you go to will have their own depending on the brand they use. Ask to look at it and go through it with them. It's just useful to have s vague understanding first. My base colour is level 6 but it's much darker than that chart ^ indicates.

notsurewhatshappening · 20/01/2019 16:20

I've had loads of grey since age 25 so since then except for pregnancies.

FiggyFudgePot · 20/01/2019 16:27

The only hairs I'm dying are eyelashes and brows. At the grand old age of 39 I have 4 silver strands on my head and I'm just going to let nature take its course. I cannot be arsed with maintenance of hair dye and hairdresser appointments . Once you start you got to keep on top of it otherwise you look like you have a dead badger lying on your head.

goodthinking99 · 20/01/2019 16:29

Started dying it all sorts of colours from 12ish...black, blonde, henna red, blue, pink, red, black again. Then grew it all out (and the dreadlocksBlush) at 28 and have had my normal red hair for the last 23 years. It's not got much grey yet so I'm hoping the red I hated so much as a teen is finally coming into its own. At last! One less thing to think of...phew.

neversleepagain · 20/01/2019 16:29

40 next month and I only have a few strands on the one side so have managed to avoid it so far.

Endofrelationship · 20/01/2019 16:31

Died it chilli pepper red when I was 12, had a bit of a Geri halliwell thing going on.

It's been various colours, both natural and non since. I also didn't dye it for a couple of years.

I've no grey yet but wouldn't hesitate to due it as soon as I found one.

ohtheholidays · 20/01/2019 16:32

I first had my hair dyed when I was 13 my lovely Dad paid alot of money for me to have high lights in my hair, after that I didn't colour it again untill I was 15/16 and that was just the wash in wash out colours.

Dyeing my hair to cover any grey hair I think I was late 30's,I'm 43 now and I pay alot of money to get my hair cut and styled every 6 weeks but I dye it at home because I can't be bothered to sit in the salon for hours waiting for the colour to take.

MeetOnTheledge · 20/01/2019 16:40

Apart from occasionally using brown henna (I have dark hair so it warms it up rather than changing the colour) I never have. I started getting the odd grey when I was 30, which I plucked out, still doing the same 20 years later, I just pull out the occasional grey when I see them. When I do get more greys I plan to just go with it, I'm not up for regilar colouring.

CakeNinja · 20/01/2019 16:45

Between about 13-16 I died it without much success - my hair is a reallly dark brown! Ended up dying it black because it was the only colour I could realistically dye it to Grin
Didn’t dye it again until my 30th birthday, had a fringe cut in and decided to add some deep dark red just to lift it a bit.
Now I have it done every 8 weeks, a trim and a full colour. Love it, brings my very dark boring hair to life a bit. It’s very similar to my natural hair colour not drastic so it’s not obvious when my hair grows but I just enjoy having it done, don’t have any greys yet. My mum didn’t go grey until her mid 30’s and I’m 33 so I’m expecting them soon!

Beerflavourednipples · 20/01/2019 16:46

I too started with 'Toners' and Wella colour mousse at about 13, started getting greys at about 17 and since then have been in a 4 weekly colouring regime. I have rarely had a few professional highlights, reds etc but mostly have always just done it myself.

Oh and obviously don't dye it yourself.

Why can't she do it herself?

kaytee87 · 20/01/2019 16:48

Why can't she do it herself?

It was an add on to my previous post about keeping it in good condition. Most people don't have a clue how to dye their hair properly.

GobblersKnob · 20/01/2019 16:50

Started dying it when I was 14, carried on until I was 38, all kinds of colours, highlights etc.

Then shaved it all off and grew out my natural colour. Lots of grey, love it. Won't dye it again.

elQuintoConyo · 20/01/2019 17:00

Between 16-22 all sorts of colours, black red blue pink purple, not all at the same time!

At 18 I noticed my first grey hair, dyed it dark brown after I graduated university and entered the workforce.

Stopped dying 5 years ago, I'm now 80% white and I love it. I wear bright lipstick so I don't look dead Grin

ArtisanPopcorn · 20/01/2019 17:09

Found grey hairs in my late teens, have very dark hair so it's really noticeable, dyed it as close to my natural hair colour as possible. Now 35 and have so much grey Sad

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 20/01/2019 17:45

I have some grey hair, I call it the sparkly bits! 😂 I have dark brown hair, I dye it sometimes when the mood takes me. I have used dark red, dark purple, blue black and a copper brown type colour. I started when I was at uni and now dye it every 6 months or so when I can be bothered or fancy a change. The grey doesn't drive me to do it, I don't mind the sparkly bits Smile

IncyWincyGrownUp · 20/01/2019 17:53

On and off since I was 18, and purely because I get bored.

Currently pink. I think the only colour I’ve never been courtesy of a bottle or a hairdresser is blonde :o

Ikeameatballs · 20/01/2019 17:55

I’m 40, have died my hair to hide the odd grey since 27. The greys are getting more and more, I’m not quite at the point of wanting to stop, in fact I bought a box dye today! It looks best if I have highlights/lowlights done at the hairdresser but that’s both too expensive and too time consuming for me.

howhowhow · 20/01/2019 17:59

14 or 15. It's natural at nearly 42 though.

howhowhow · 20/01/2019 18:00

I don't have any grey though. I would dye if I did.

BiteyShark · 20/01/2019 18:03

Never. I am greying and I don't actually care.
