Fitbit steps - how many?

Shoeshelpplease · 19/01/2019 20:57

Can I be a nosey parker and ask you to log here how many Fitbit steps you've achieved day by day for the past week?

There's a reason I ask and I'll explain more once we have a few results.

Be honest please Grin

I try and walk rather than drive. Mon/Tue/Wed was the nursery run and then to work and same in the eve. Thursday my parents pick up dd before I go to work. Friday I drove. It shows how very incredibly sedentary I could be if I relied on a car all the time!

RavenLG · 19/01/2019 22:14

Sedentary job so usually 6k which is bad.

Today I’ve done nearly 7k and I’ve not left the house but I’ve been cleaning like a madwoman and running around all day lol.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/01/2019 22:16

I have a sedentary job but exercise before I go and walk loads on my day off on Friday. I walk to and from the station and also walk at lunch time.

Weekends are hit and miss, depending on what we do with the kids.

I'm also tall with a long stride length, so my 10,000 steps is a shorter person's 12,000.

Sedentary job with evenings spent driving kids around, not much time for stepping.

A couple of years ago I set a goal of averaging 10k steps a day for a whole year. I did it but did have to go out of my way to spend hours just walking for the sake of it to get the steps.

Nowhere near as good as anyone else on here tbh. I have a very sedentary job and spend hours in meetings so most of my steps are outside the normal working day. I do try to average 10000 a day across the week though.

So OP why were you asking? I am intrigued😀

shewholikeslipstick · 20/01/2019 10:50

@Shoeshelpplease
Are you coming back to tell us why you asked?

Shoeshelpplease · 20/01/2019 16:53

Sorry, I had forgotten I had posted this. Nothing too exciting Im afraid.

I generally do between 15,000 and 20,000 a day and dont feel I am particularly over active.

I was listening to a podcast last week that said THE MAJORITY of fit and active people in this country don't achieve the recommended 10,000 a day and I was really shocked. Even a lazy day when I dont leave the house I could easily achieve 8,000 a day.

These results, although far from representative, show that a lot of Mumsnetters do achieve the 10,000. Unfortunately it was an old podcast so I couldn't look into the research behind this fact.

Shoeshelpplease · 20/01/2019 16:56

We should do another one re the sleep that is monitored on the fitbits (or equivalent) and see how many are achieving the recommended amount on a regular basis.

Shoeshelpplease · 20/01/2019 16:57

Oh and here is mine, I set my target as 15,000 a day.

Its great to see the photos so we know for sure there is no poetic licence in those results!

Pedometer not Fitbit. I don't count general walking around the house or at work. Only proper 'walking' iyswim. Always 12000+ usually nearer to 20000.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 20/01/2019 17:04

I average around 15k.

Today I have done 100. As I’m very hung over 😂

Out of interest, for those who average 20K steps a day, do you feel slim & toned? Has it helped you lose weight?

DrAdmin · 20/01/2019 17:17

9-10 k every day.

I have an Apple Watch, does anyone know if it takes account of my shortness (5 foot) when calculating my steps? Someone upthread said that you might do more steps with a short stride but your device doesn’t know that.

RedPandaMama · 20/01/2019 17:18

Monday - 9200
Tuesday - 7200
Wednesday - 7000
Thursday - 16,900
Friday & Saturday Fitbit died and forgot to charge
Today - 6500 so far

Average around 8000 a day. Trying to hit 10k more often but difficult as sedentary job then spend a lot of time studying at home.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/01/2019 17:20

Just finishing off my seven day results. I'm not planning on moving much more now, and it needs to go on charge too, so won't be counting!

I've been to the allotment today and do thousands while I'm there, plus I walk there and back too. I burn extra calories with all the digging I do too, so it's win / win!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/01/2019 17:23

@DrAdmin, it's the distance which differs. So it knows how many steps you've done, regardless of leg length, but it might think you've walked further than you have unless you've told it your stride length. Equally, those of us with stupidly long legs do more miles than it thinks we have unless we've told it our stride length. I imagine it just gives an average stride length to all, so while it'll log your steps, it can't know the actual distance travelled.

donajimena · 20/01/2019 17:27

Oh my word. I'm so lazy. I aim for 8000. The most I have ever done is 23,000 which was in Alton Towers. I needed a lie down after that.

tabulahrasa · 20/01/2019 17:35

I think either mine runs low or other peoples run high...

Because I can spend all day on my feet in the house and never get above 5k doing housework

I’ve also done events where I’ve been as active if not more than other people I know with fitbits and I’ve hit 30k... but they’ve done 40k...

shewholikeslipstick · 20/01/2019 17:39

In the interest of research GrinI set my Fitbit up with my height set at 5ft 1 ( rather than true height 6ft) for a week & the difference in recorded steps was quite remarkable despite doing the same activity.

CantBeArsed99 · 20/01/2019 22:38

Can I recommend a really interesting BBC programme called The Truth About Getting Fit with Michael Moseley https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09qjl7d
It kind of blows the 10000 steps thing into perspective, so many of you might feel a bit fitter than you do now Wink
