40th birthday party ideas

My partner is 40 in October. It's our first as a family of three so I'd like to do something special. I can't think of anything other than hosting a dinner party for our friends though so would really welcome some creative ideas!

Surprise European mini-break for the three of you.
Surprise party in a private area of a bar with all his friends and family.
Nice meal out for close friends and family at a nice restaurant.
Hire a villa somewhere hot for friends and family.

What kind of budget do you have?

Or you could book a weekend away for just the three of you but also invite your good friends and they could surprise him at the airport or at destination.

Is he into any activities? Paintballing, ziplines, circus skills? Anything you could do with good friends.

I know someone who hired a private chef to come over for her husband's 40th if you wanted to stick with the dinner party but make it a bit more special.
