Weekend away

We might have a couple of nights away next weekend, just me and DH. We live in London and don't drive so there needs to be a train or bus, and we don't mind taking a taxi from a station. Interested in a nice hotel (doesn't need to be 5 star or anything), short country walks but not too hilly, maybe a village or small town with a nice pub, general relaxation and stuff. We were thinking of going to Lewes which is lovely but it seems very expensive. Bonus points for interesting events going on although I know it's a quiet time of year.

Never stayed there but always wanted to.

How bizarre. I was going to suggest Lewes! Just don't stay in The Crown Inn.

Winchester is lovely. So is Rye although it's a bit of a ballache on the train. The Ship is lovely.

Ooh ooh - Alresford is gorgeous. Change trains at Alton and get the steam train to Alresford through stunning scenery.

Oh a steam train always gets bonus points!

Yes - you could make it part of the trip. Station is right in the centre. Very pretty small town. Lots of lovely independent shops and pubs. Nice circular walk by the river. Fits the bill I think.

There are nice hotels & country walks in old Amersham & it has a metropolitan line station so about an hour from Baker Street station, 50 mins Finchley Road etc.
