Struggling to lose weight. Taking sertraline.

I’ve been low carbing since the beginning of December, I haven’t had one cheat day (not even Christmas Day!), but apart from an initial bit of weight shifting I’ve lost nothing.
I’m on 100mg of sertraline a day, does anyone know if this can hinder losing weight?

Anyone?

I'm on Sertraline. As far as I know, it's one of the more modern ADs and doesn't have form for causing weight gain or preventing weight loss.

TheMatriarch · 19/01/2019 10:20

Oh, that’s sort of disappointing!

I'm on setraline (50mg) and have lost some weight through healthy eating and exercise

AnnaMagnani · 19/01/2019 10:30

What are your total calories?

Sorry, but sertraline isn't a weight gain anti-depressant.

I'm currently low-carbing on citalopram but have been completely ruthless - no carbs, quit sugar, 800-1000 calories.

Have you checked things like portion size? When I started I weighed everything and logged on the MyFitnessPal app - it was mindblowing how much I actually ate Sad

There is a lot of support on threads like the Blood Sugar Diet here.

Weight gain is a potential side effect of Sertraline. It may not affect everyone but it seems it does affect you. I had the same problem.
Switching meds may help, but if you are stable on the one you use it can be daunting to change.

Frosty66611 · 19/01/2019 10:35

Can you give us an idea of what you eat every day and we might be able to advise. MyFitnessPal can be really good for tracking calories

FranklinTheCat · 19/01/2019 10:39

I gained a fair amount of weight in Sertraline - so although it may not be one of the more notorious ones, my experience is that for some people it does affect weight and metabolism.

SatsumaFan · 19/01/2019 10:41

Sorry for the thread hijack OP ! But has anyone else had weight gain issues on fluoexitine/Prozac please?

Rockchick1984 · 19/01/2019 10:44

I gained 2 stone when I started taking sertraline and hadn’t changed anything about my diet, the only thing that had changed was starting the medication Sad

KosmoKramer · 19/01/2019 10:50

Another one here who gained weight on Sertraline and could not lose it. Despite low carbing, the weight is only starting to shift now after 4 months of stopping Sertraline.

TheMatriarch · 19/01/2019 13:50

I piled on weight when I started sertraline, even though I was eating the same. I was overweight to start with.

I’m eating typical low carb stuff, but not overindulging on cheese. I generally eat two meals a day, and if I snack it’ll be a few nuts or something like that. Probably 2-4 days a week I do 16/8 intermittent fasting (so eg, last night I ate at about 8.30, I haven’t eaten yet today, I’m not hungry at all, which suggests that something’s happening, but I’m not losing).
I do have some days where I’m starving, but stick to low carb/Keto food, up fats so I’m not hungry.
I’m not tracking, because typically when I do i give up, so I’m trying to make it a lifestyle change - no sugar, bread, carbs that aren’t in low carb veg, I don’t drink anyway, I only drink water now.

My GP has said I’m ok to start slowly decreasing, so over the next few weeks I’ll hopefully get down to 50mg and see how I’m doing.

In the past I’ve generally found it quite easy to lose weight, once I’m in the zone. This is the strictest I’ve been ever, literally no cheat days, even when my children are having chocolate and donuts and stuff!
It’s disheartening to see others who started at the same time as me who have lost over a stone, and I’m still here forcing my size 20 jeans on!

Yep, I gained weight with sertraline, I gain on any SSRI/SNRI, but citalopram is the absolute worst for me (about 2.5stone). Tends to start 7-9 months in

It’s a shame, as I find them really effective

hidinginthenightgarden · 20/01/2019 07:30

It is possible that you are not eating enough. Every now and then you need to feed your body or it will go into starvation mode.

babysharkah · 20/01/2019 07:41

Thing is with low carb is that you can go over on calories it's. It a magic formula that melts weight away. Can you give an example of your meals?

mrsjackrussell · 20/01/2019 07:55

Yes I think it's sertraline. My daughter rapidly went from a 6 to a size 12 on them within months.
