How are they? Are you getting any news? Where are they?

No but I did visit there a long time ago. Its a beautiful country and its awful that it seems something nasty is occurring there again.

Is something up in Zimbabwe?

MadCatEnthusiast · 18/01/2019 19:41

Isn't there an internet shutdown by the govt?

bigbluebus · 18/01/2019 19:43

Was listenening to an interview on local radio earlier with a couple who moved here from Zimbabwe a few years ago. They were very worried as there is now no contact with their family due to the internet blackout.

Lodgepot · 18/01/2019 19:44

Yes, I have an friend I haven't heard from them today, I've messaged but I believe they've blocked various messaging services so no replies.

Overstating · 18/01/2019 19:44

Harare and rural. Grateful one family member is paid in USD. Part of private convoys in from SA. It's dire. But they're so resilient. Makes you realise how soft we have it, and what nonsense the Brexit panic is in context. Fuel is just the latest blow.

Okki · 18/01/2019 20:31

@Lodgepot - texts have been getting through. Whereabouts are they? I'm from Byo originally so still have friends there.

@Overstating do you follow Noreen Welch at all? She's been banned from FB for a week. Apparently overseas ZANU activists got her banned.

Rumour apparently another coup has been attempted but no one knows what's going on

@MadCatEnthusiast it's a lot more than an internet shutdown. Rioting, army confiscating mobiles and in some cases shooting people in the high density suburbs. Schools businesses and shops all shut.

I’ve seen Facebook posts from a few friends in Harare - they’re fine. Very limited internet and they’re keeping updated on the local news via car radio. They’re all staying home and apparently safe on the whole.

Okki · 18/01/2019 20:51

The US Embassy says Monitor local news stations for updates including Voice of America on Channel 909 AM in Harare and on short-wave 4930, 7210 and 12120 kilohertz frequencies

Right. Does this affect neighbouring countries?

Okki · 18/01/2019 21:45

Don't think so.

Do now! Thanks @Okki.
