So it’s looking like on Sunday we will get 2ft of snow dumped on us, daytime temp of -8c dropping to -17 at night, that’s not taking into account the windchill.

Today we stocked up on food and now have 20L of petrol in cans for the generator.

I am actually looking forward to it. My inner Prepper is happy and shouting Yey this is what we have been training for!!

My mum has been sending me updates from Quebec.
We went over for Christmas last month and there was just a sprinkling of snow. My DH was most disappointed.
I do miss cosy days inside after a blizzard.
Enjoy!

When it's that cold but otherwise not dangerous to go out (as in no hurricanes or visual hinderances etc.) Do you go out at all and if so, what do you wear?

Guessing a puffa jacket from Uniqlo isn't going to cut it. Grin

DulciUke · 19/01/2019 14:20

When I lived in North Dakota, a full length down coat would work. Here in New York, a wool coat is generally enough. It is important though to have warm socks, hat, etc for extremities. As far as going out, it somewhat depends on whether the area that you live in typically gets those type of winter temperatures and you are mentally prepared for the idea of going outside Smile Believe it or not, when it has been -20 F for a few days, -5 feels almost balmy!

BoogleMcGroogle · 19/01/2019 14:31

I'm so envious, New England is great in the summer but I bet it's awesome in the winter. When we were in Cape Cod there were loads of 'live free or die' NH plates, and I imagined the nature and the people tending towards the untameable 😉 Please send pictures! England is sad and grey.

freezinguplands · 19/01/2019 14:32

I have a good range of thermals, a thermal face snood and a full length down coat, thin and thick gloves to be worn together, lined boots. I don't like being cold.
It has been mild this winter and when it was 4 degrees or so I saw people still just wearing shorts because it actually felt warm.

We’re having a board game afternoon with friends tomorrow afternoon to watch the snow In Boston. We all live in the same apartment block so as long as the power stays on it should be easy to get home. If the power goes out we’re snowed in, I could contemplate walking down 24 floors but not back up!

EnidButton · 19/01/2019 16:12

It's a tropical 3 degrees here in Northern England. I see Monday on NYC is going to be -12 in the afternoon when people will have to be out. Brr!

I really do hope people who are homeless will be extra cared for.

EnidButton · 19/01/2019 16:13

Don't know why but snow in Boston is sounding very glamorous to me. Like the setting for a film.

EnidButton · 19/01/2019 16:14

Thank you for the clothing info btw. I suppose you do adjust to it. Like lasses in Newcastle going out out in tiny mini dresses and sandals when it's -2 and their uni mates from down South are in a huge coat. Grin

chemenger · 19/01/2019 16:37

Our forecast in Boston seems to have been downgraded to sleet, not quite so glamorous! Monday is meant to be -15 feels like -26 at times (centigrade).

Clothing wise you have to layer up and wear a warm hat! If I'm going to be outside for a longer period I find that merino base layers under a mid-layer fleece with a heavy down jacket on top and merino leggings under lined trousers work best. I have a lot of Icebreaker stuff. Thick merino socks and waterproof, insulated boots like Sorels. Lined or woollen mittens are better than gloves as they keep your fingers together so they stay warmer. A neck buff or scarf helps and a warm hat is essential!

If you're not going to be standing or walking around outside for long then normal clothes are fine with a warm down coat or parka - Canada Goose coats are VERY popular here - plus gloves and a hat.

Carhartt, we wear a lot of Carhartt!!! Lots of layers.

My sister came to visit in the winter and came with lots of ski clothes. She found them completely inappropriate. It was just too cold for them

freezinguplands · 19/01/2019 19:40

The downside of all the layers is that I nearly passed out with heatstroke having just walked down to the supermarket and picked up a few things. Fine for outside but far too hot for inside 🥵

Backwoodsgirl · 20/01/2019 01:06

8pm here and it’s started to snow, 2-3 inches per hour.

The downside the chainsaw packed up today, the backup chainsaw is down being repaired. So if trees come down in the night we are going to be clearing them with a axe

chordFire · 20/01/2019 10:01

Fingers crossed you won't need them! I hope you are doing nice cozy things to stay relaxed and warm.

WickedGoodDoge · 20/01/2019 14:34

Hope no trees came down, but it’s well into morning for you now so WHERE ARE THE SNOW PHOTOS????

Just went for a trudge outside. It's 16 f so far but dropping. I think we have about 18 inches and it is still snowing hard. DD is disappointed that it isn't good sticky snow for making igloos and snow animals. DS is hiding inside next to the fire

SeaToSki

Yes very fine light snow. Easy to move.

Here is the view from the front porch and the lonely porta potty (the house is being renovated). Glad I don't have to use it! There is some wind, so we are getting some drifts, the road has been plowed once but is filling back in and our driveway is impassable. There is a nice man in a truck who will plow us out later as it's too long and steep to do ourselves.

I’ve been in the NE several times during white-outs. Commiserations on the amount of digging out you’ll need to do. But also I’ve been so impressed by the “business as usualness” with ploughs our and trains running with really low disruption.

I’m sure I read a couple of years ago the residents of Boston pleaded with the bosses of Netflix to drop the latest series of House of Cards during the massive snow, it was that myth?

Good luck Op.

That's not a porta potty, that's the tardis.

Like Vet, I’m also in Alberta but a bit further north. We’ve had these temps for most of the week. Finally warming up to -18 today!
