No state help at all salary (after tax) of 15,300 per year. £1275 per month
Rent £400pcm for a flat. Would £875 be enough for food, bills etc?
I know it’s a bit ambiguous but assuming minimal Internet package and no TV and a basic/cheap food spend, would I Be alright? I’m a single woman, no kids.
Thank you in advance for any insight

What would your travel costs be?

Noonemournsthewicked · 17/01/2019 20:13

Yes as long as you have no debts.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 17/01/2019 20:13

You'll be fine on that. I lived on a similar amount with the same sort of rent as a single person.

It sounds like just enough. I rented a flat for slightly more than that while on a similar salary, but that was years ago and cost of living will have gone up a lot since then. How much is the Council Tax?
I think you would get by but you wouldn't get many treats or be able to save much.

MoneyQuestion79 · 17/01/2019 20:15

No debts no travel costs (it’s within walking distance to work).

cushioncovers · 17/01/2019 20:16

Yes it will be enough

MoneyQuestion79 · 17/01/2019 20:17

I think after single person discount council tax would be £70 a month but I don’t know how much utilities etc are though.

KenAdams · 17/01/2019 20:17

Whereabouts in the country?

NC4Now · 17/01/2019 20:17

Yes, you’ll get by on that. Make sure you get your single person discount on council tax and the best rates for utilities. I use utility warehouse but it’s not for everyone.
Travel costs are the other biggie - will you run a car or use public transport?

littlecloudling · 17/01/2019 20:18

Yes!

Passthepigs · 17/01/2019 20:18

Yes that should be plenty!

Sarahandduck18 · 17/01/2019 20:18

Just for one person?

Of course!

Have you looked up the costs of council tax/tv licence/ insurance/ phone/ etc?

haverhill · 17/01/2019 20:19

How much roughly would your bills be?

Grace212 · 17/01/2019 20:19

yes, it will be fine. definitely don't forget the council tax discount, I made that mistake when I first lived alone - claimed it back, but for some reason thought that the bill I was sent originally included the discount.

NC4Now · 17/01/2019 20:20

Ah, no travel costs, that’s good.
So you need gas/electric, phone, broadband, water.
For a flat you can probably get that for £100-£150.

MeOldChina · 17/01/2019 20:20

Yes, i've done similar and had car finance and a fair bit of petrol costs due to my commute. Some months were a bit tight if I had an unexpected cost but it was fine.

Tink1990 · 17/01/2019 20:21

U should be fine with that Smile

MoneyQuestion79 · 17/01/2019 20:22

I’m trying to research the cost of bills but honestly feeling a bit lost I found the council tax band and rate and I found a cheap internet package for £19 a month but I’m feeling a tad lost otherwise, it’s all new to me.

OP posts:
WH1SPERS · 17/01/2019 20:22

Is that for a flat share ?

If not, you’re CT is too low. And so is your rent.

Grace212 · 17/01/2019 20:25

can you ask the landlord for an estimate on the other bills?

AmphetamineGazelle · 17/01/2019 20:25

I'd factor in where and how you will food shop. If you have no car and are reliant on smaller shops it could be double of say Aldi or Lidl.

ifoundthebread · 17/01/2019 20:25

I'm in the North East. I pay £30 mobile phone. £120 for gas+elec in a 4 bed, 3story house. £12 TV licence. £15 basic sky TV. Water is £40 a month (I think). £60ish a week for an adult and 2 toddlers shopping. So I think for just yourself you should have plenty

ifoundthebread · 17/01/2019 20:31

@WH1SPERS depends where op loves. I payed £475 for my 2 bed house in a nicer part of my area.

WhatASmashingBlouse · 17/01/2019 20:32

WH1SPERS - There are lots of areas of the uk where you can rent a flat for £400pcm! Rent can be whatever the landlords says it is.

OP your council tax estimate does seem cheap though. Even with 25% single person discount I was paying £90 a month (in the Midlands).

Omgineedanamechange · 17/01/2019 20:32

Maybe where you live, but round here that sounds about right.
