Positive driving test stories

have my test next week and although I enjoy driving the manouevers really stress me out which makes me make stupid mistakes, my nerves get the better of me. I have had 35 hours of lessons and inbetween in my own car with family there's no reason I can't do it but I'm so anxious. Anyone want to share any positive stories with me.

Watching with interest as have my test in a few weeks. I had a mock test with my instructor a couple of weeks ago - I was nervous but did ok. Someone on another thread said pretend the examiner is a colleague and you are giving them a lift home, they are just giving you directions on the way. Should help the nerves a bit!

nowifi · 17/01/2019 18:46

Tried to do a hill start without putting the car in gear, had to overtake a horse, got overtaken by an OAP and still passed, you can do it!

If if helps to talk yourself through it whilst driving that is what I did. Also think a lot depends on the test examinator and what vibe they give to you to make you feel relaxed or not, my first one was a knob and no surprise I failed that one!

supermariossister · 17/01/2019 18:55

Mock tests haven't been too bad but I stuffed up parallel park royally. Hill starts used to break me out in sweats haha now it's the manouevers. Overtaking a horse likely in the area I'm in, and yep I do think that the examiners and the vibe they give will make a big difference to me. Just feel like I'm going to make myself a wreck by next week stressing

i decided i'd failed mine about ten minutes in, so just drove as normal. I'd passed, i think i relaxed and so nerves didn't get to me, passed first time

ShowOfHands · 17/01/2019 18:58

I got all of my anxiety out of the way in advance. On the day, I went to the loo in the test centre and had a stern word in the mirror. Told myself that my own DC did brave and new stuff all the time and with grace. Warned myself that I had an example to set, held my head aloft and marched out to take the test.

Passed first time with no minors.

bluejelly · 17/01/2019 19:00

Driving tests really aren't that bad. Promise. I failed my first, rebooked my second and passed that with flying colours. Loads of people pass second time round so why not see the first test as a practice go?

supermariossister · 17/01/2019 19:15

Am hoping to try the whole treat it as giving someone a lift but it's when nervous I mess things up. I love written stuff, theory I wasn't a bit worried but hate being watched under pressure. That's true a second time wouldn't be a disaster.

My first test I was a nervous wreck and the man was horrible. My second test I was better prepared for what to expect and I chatted to the examiner the whole way through. It helped me relax and I got a decent pass. I agree with PP that you shouldn’t worry too much about failing the first one as nerves so often get the better of you. If it doesn’t go your way you can always try again!

Finfintytint · 17/01/2019 19:25

I met an elephant on my test! Visiting circus was parading an elephant around the local estate. The instructor was impressed that I was not flustered. Expect the unexpected and treat everything as a hazard and you'll be fine.

supermariossister · 17/01/2019 19:28

Oh my god that would Deffo be the unexpected! How awesome is that though, an elephant.

supermariossister · 17/01/2019 19:31

I'm hoping I can see it like that and try to not feel so bad if the first doesn't go my way. So nerve wracking.

Finfintytint · 17/01/2019 19:53

I passed second time. My indicators failed and I didn't think to do hand signals. They failed again on my second test and that time I did hand signals (crappy mini metro 30 odd years ago).
I was super nervous OP but progressed to several years later to blue lighting round the town in my profession having a whale of a time!

explodingkitten · 17/01/2019 20:33

I was very nervous, didn't drive as well as during the lessons, had to start over with parallel parking, passed the first time because I was driving really safe. Not in UK though, although doing your driving test in Amsterdam isn't fun...

supermariossister · 18/01/2019 13:00

God I remember my aunt's mini metro from years ago, my uncle's ripped her for it but she loved that car until it fell to pieces. I can imagine Amsterdam is very tricky! Lesson today so a mock test and it's just started sleeting here. Joy 👌

I just did my driving test two days ago and passed first time, but I don't deal well with nerves I'm an extremely nervous person to the point I shake and go into complete panic mode.. the only thing I found to calm me down was I drilled it into my head that I was going for a test run... if I fail, I can do it again.. it's no big deal... :) the examiners will try to make you feel comfortable and talk to you too put you at ease.
Try not to over think it xx

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 18/01/2019 13:10

I bombed my first two pretty badly, one within seconds of pulling away from the kerb. After doing so badly at the first two I think I was a bit more Zen in the third, feeling however badly I did it couldn't get worse. I passed fine, despite asking for a second go at the parallel park as I got the angles all wrong first time.

This will sound horribly bitchy (because it is), but I also had a driving role model in my head - a celebrity famed for their limited brain power and poor decision making. I kept thinking that if X could get a licence then I bloody well could.

pinkcardi · 18/01/2019 13:14

I passed first time despite:

  • being in the wrong lane on a massive roundabout. I swore loudly, and moved lane. She said because I had 'recognised the issue, corrected and safely exited' it was fine
  • indicated too early at one junction
  • stalled coming out of the test centre.

Miracles do happen, you never know! Will keep fingers crossed.

supermariossister · 18/01/2019 13:47

These have made me feel better. I can relate to the roundabout wrong lane 😂 haha don't mind about the feeling bitchy I have been trying to say to myself well if x can do it you certainly can. It's relief for me to know things can go wrong and it's how you deal with them

Got through mine first time with three minors, I have no idea what they were at this distance though! That was driving around urban Leeds with its horrendous one way and very short multiple-laning systems. I still dislike taking the car in there, 25 years on.

Deep breaths, don't look at the examiner while you're driving, keep checking your mirrors. It'll be fine.

supermariossister · 21/01/2019 15:38

Well completely bollocksed my lesson today. Been up half the night with a cough like a sealion and my head was well and truly up my backside, silly mistakes all over the show. Dreading end of the week even more now!

OP posts:
misscockerspaniel · 21/01/2019 16:04

I was fine until I got to the test centre, when I physically started shaking. The tester walked out, my driving instructor said, don't worry, he likes legs. Grin I forgot to put on my seatbelt so had to stop to deal with that, I stalled on the hill start, had several attempts at the parking, we only made left hand turns and I passed. First time. My tip is to make it obvious that you are regularly checking the mirrors.

Lottapianos · 21/01/2019 16:17

'Well completely bollocksed my lesson today. '

We have all had lessons like that Smile you learn loads on every lesson, including the crappy ones

DelurkingAJ · 21/01/2019 16:38

First test...did a drive round with instructor beforehand and ended up practising reverse parking around the same car I then had to reverse park round in the actual test! Failed to put car in gear coming back into test centre...chap doing test said ‘you aren’t in gear, it doesn’t matter’ very kindly so I parked convinces I’d failed. I passed!

It was 1 April and everyone I told thought I was joking...and were surprised I wasn’t as I’m not terribly well coordinated. I was not impressed with them!

supermariossister · 21/01/2019 18:06

It's strange isn't it people's stories are so different and every one has such different experiences. I am kicking myself tonight don't know what happened I was just not on the ball.
