Positive driving test stories

65 replies

supermariossister · 17/01/2019 18:41

have my test next week and although I enjoy driving the manouevers really stress me out which makes me make stupid mistakes, my nerves get the better of me. I have had 35 hours of lessons and inbetween in my own car with family there's no reason I can't do it but I'm so anxious. Anyone want to share any positive stories with me.

Have you had your test yet? If so how did you get on xxx

supermariossister · 24/01/2019 23:10

Failed with a serious for mirrors change of direction on a roundabout, so annoyed at myself but trying to chalk it up to experience and rebook. Frustratingly there is no tests available at the local centre now until April.

I've taken four tests (passed two, had to do an additional one for a specific vehicle type). Always found examiners very understanding of nerves. Take your time, better a minor for hesitating than a major for causing a problem. Drill yourself on the show me tell me questions as that is all in your control and will get you off to a good confidence boosting start. In the test I took recently I apologised in advance to the examiner as I tend to do a running commentary when nervous, I think it might actually have helped him see I was thinking about things but not sure I'd recommend it as a tactic 😂 good luck for your test, it won't be fun but it won't be anywhere near as bad as you are imagining it, I promise.

Oh bugger @supermariosister I didn't read full thread. At least you know the drill for when you get a rebook, do they do a cancellation list by any chance? Great that you want to get back on it and haven't been put off.

chocolatecake08 · 25/01/2019 07:18

@supermariossister

I passed after my 2nd attempt yesterday.

I can honestly say it went horrific but still managed to pass🤷🏼‍♀️

I really think its the examiner you get and luck of the draw, because if i had of got the examiner i did last time I would have failed, dont give up though!! X

Lottapianos · 25/01/2019 07:19

Supermario, there are websites that will find you an earlier test date. I used fetchatest.com - you pay £20 and they will search for any cancellations in your area within your specified dates and text you immediately

WhereAreAllTheUsernames · 25/01/2019 07:20

Chocolatecake08 that is exactly what I thought when I passed on my 2nd test.

chocolatecake08 · 25/01/2019 07:43

@WhereAreAllTheUsernames

I kerbed the car 5 seconds in literally pulling out of the test centre carpark..

I then nearly went the wrong way and he shouted 'do you even know where your going' which threw me off completely that i nearly cried there and then

Comes to my manoeuvre i bashed the kerb during parallel park

I also stalled at a round about and every time i spoke he shouted 'JUST FOCUS ON THE ROUND ABOUT INSTEAD / THIS IS A TEST ENVIRONMENT BE QUIET'🙄🙄

I still passed with 7 minors but I know had i had my first examiner id have failed, i fully believe its who you get xx

Lottapianos · 25/01/2019 07:44

My god chocolate, what an utter arsehole Shock

supermariossister · 25/01/2019 08:02

Chocolate he sounds an utter nob. Congrats on the test passes :) Oh I'll have a look at the cancellations idea thanks, the actual test was alright I was so pissed off that it was in the last 3 minutes on a roundabout that was totally empty 👊

I passed on my third try. I was so nervous the first two times I really messed up but the last time I was used to the test if you know what I mean that I was more relaxed. Also the examiner was new to the area and got lost. He never said anything but it was obvious when we went through the same huge roundabout four times as he tried to get back to the centre and kept going the wrong way 😂

Hen2018 · 25/01/2019 08:14

On an incredibly foggy and drizzly September morning, I drove off without putting my lights on and got a verbal warning.

5 mins in and a boy racer zoomed towards us on our side of the road. Staring death in the face, I threw the car up a side road (no time to indicate, slow down or get in the right gear). The tester actually did an audible gasp of breath!

Passed first time.

chocolatecake08 · 25/01/2019 08:52

@Lottapianos ahahah he was

Does anyone here feel absolutely terrified about driving on their own?? Im far to scared and still haven't been on my own since passing😕

Lottapianos · 26/01/2019 20:21

Take your time with it, chocolate. I have my test in a few weeks so haven't driven on my own yet, but it's definitely a big scary stage to go through. Like everything to do with driving, there's nothing for it but just to face it Hmm. How would you feel about driving round the block, or doing a 5 minute journey nice and steady?

socktastic · 26/01/2019 20:26

The night before my second test I was at a busy roundabout at rush hour. I waited for what seemed like forever then when I had a chance to go, I stalled. Result, 3 car bumps with the car in the middle having a folded bonnet and boot (and it was a courtesy car).

There was no way I was ever driving again. I wasn't doing my test the next day. Until my dad made me. He took me out made me drive the route again.

I passed the test the next day (although I did manage to stall a fair few times!)

VinnythePanda · 26/01/2019 21:01

I passed my third test. My driving instructor had said “as long as you don’t get Barbara, you’ll be fine”. Barbara had a reputation of being very picky- she’d failed my best friend and ripped her to shreds - and according to my driving instructor, had been subject to some sort of disciplinary measure after a lot of complaints.

Of course Barbara comes out and calls my name Confused She was a very stern-looking woman, like a scary headmistress. I was terrified!

As we walked to the car, she commented on my bright pink cardigan, saying she loves the colour pink. I showed her how my nails matched the cardigan and she really liked them. I didn’t get any hard feelings from her.

Did my test quite happily. A couple of little mistakes here and there, including a lot of hesitation at one junction. When we returned, she said I’d passed and told me & my driving instructor that she could have failed me for undue hesitation but gave me the benefit of the doubt.

My instructor was agog! I’m not sure if it’s because our chat at the start built up a little rapport but she seemed to really like me. She was nothing like her reputation!

CantWaitToRetire · 26/01/2019 21:24

My daughter had to do a parallel park and was a mile away from the kerb. Before plying the hand brake she told the examiner she was going to straighten up and did so. She passed but the examiner told her if she hadn’t of corrected her parking it would have been a fail so don’t be afraid to correct if you feel you’ve done something wrong.

Her instructor is now an examiner and is the nicest person. If he gets a really nervous person he’ll have them pull over, give them a little pep talk and then have them get on with the test.

CantWaitToRetire · 26/01/2019 21:24

*applying

chocolatecake08 · 26/01/2019 21:53

@Lottapianos

Decided to go for it and ended up driving to my partners 18 mile aways🙄, i panicked to the high heavens witnessed a crash, a dead cat, got stuck in the middle of a police chase, stalled at the lights because the man behind beeped at me after the lights were green for naught of a second and then repeatedly stalled after he kept beeping then cried all away home ahahahahaha

Cuppaand2biscuits · 26/01/2019 21:59

I was completely unprepared for how nervous I was going to be on the test. I didn't learn until I was in my twenties and had bought a car to practice in. Went out in it lots with FIL, DH, my dad, my brother obviously had proper instructor lessons alongside.
Driving with the examiner I was so nervous it all went wrong. Had to take rescue remedy before my 2nd test and then I passed.
Good luck! I'm so pleased I stuck with it.

Lottapianos · 27/01/2019 08:49

Yay chocolate! Be proud of yourself! That's amazing. What is it with all this aggressive beeping? Bloody idiots! Ignore it and just do your thing safely
