He's fine, apparently, but the car overturned. Nr Sandringham.

It looks like it.

Why was the last post deleted? Couldn’t possibly post something about royalty that you’d happily post about any other common elderly member of the population after they’d been involved in a car crash... Hmm

lumpsofitroundtheback · 17/01/2019 21:33

Rather a lot of speculation on here, no doubt a fuller picture will become clear fairly soon. Anyway, I hope everyone involved is ok.

HoraceCope · 17/01/2019 22:11

Imagine it was you that crashed into his car Shock

how did they help him out, the car fell onto the passenger side. He is unscathed, allegedly

HoraceCope · 17/01/2019 22:16

i just read he gave up flying at the age of 55, but should have given up at the age of 48.
and there is also a picture of him driving the president obama and his wife, and the queen back in 2016.

i would worry about his ability to turn his head to see.
and yes, age the age of 75 you need to reapply for a license. my dm still drives, and she is 83

UrsulaPandress · 17/01/2019 22:28

I once turned a car on it’s side and fell to the passenger side. I couldn’t open the door as it was so bloody heavy but a lovely lorry driver opened the door and helped me to climb out. I was late 20s though not late 90s.

ManicUnicorn · 18/01/2019 08:06

Apparently there was a baby in the car he crashed into. This could have been so much worse.

bigbluebus · 18/01/2019 08:13

I can't imagine that he popped out in the car completely unaccompanied. Surely there was a protection officer either in the car with him or in another car behind?

MasonJar · 18/01/2019 08:26

Surely there was a protection officer either in the car with him or in another car behind?
According to one report the police were asked about this and declined to say whether there was anyone with him.

UtterlyDesperate · 18/01/2019 08:35

Surely, though, to overturn his car, the other one must have been going a hell of a speed, given that police have confirmed he was driving one of the Royal Family's reinforced (ie very heavy) vehicles?

Nice to see thar MN Republicans have already decided that it's all his fault, that he doesn't care about the injured, and tossing in some random ageism along the way, though Hmm

BIWI · 18/01/2019 08:46

Yes, my thoughts exactly, @UtterlyDesperate Hmm

Who knows what happened? Maybe the other car was driving on the wrong side of the road? Maybe they were driving without their lights on? Maybe they were driving too fast for the road?

I'm no fan of the monarchy, but it's pointless speculating about something that happened without any of us being there to witness it for ourselves - especially if it's to cast aspersions about one of those involved.

BertrandRussell · 18/01/2019 08:52

It is surprising that the Sandringham statement didn’t mention the people in the other car. Not good PR really.
It’s almost as if he’s going to have to make an insurance claim and is being incredibly careful not to say anything that might implicate him......

LegalEaglesNeeded · 18/01/2019 08:53

There’s a report he was ‘blinded by the sun’ so pretty conclusive it was his fault.

BertrandRussell · 18/01/2019 09:09

I would have thought that the fact that it was him pulling out of a drive into traffic means it was his fault.

INeedNewShoes · 18/01/2019 09:13

What a lovely thread.

BertrandRussell · 18/01/2019 09:18

Not a good moment for my Princess of Wales joke then.......Grin

Riotingbananas · 18/01/2019 09:26

May be he shouldn't be driving, but his age is not the deciding factor in that.

Age is really likely to be a deciding factor in people stopping driving. Over 80s are the second most dangerous group of drivers, god knows what the over 90s stats are like. It doesn't matter that a few people on TV can still drive acceptably, overall our capacity for driving decreases when we are old.

My FiL had been a member of the Advanced Driving Institute for years, but as he reached old age, his driving became erratic (and that's being kind) and we managed to get his licence taken away. I've had a car written off by an elderly driver who came at me on the wrong side, and when he saw me, took his hands off the steering wheel in horror. He then hit me head on. And my XFiL was stopped by the police twice for driving dangerously slowly on dual carriageways.

The young and the very elderly are more likely to be the cause of accidents, there's no escaping that. If Philip caused this accident as appears likely from the circumstances, he should stop driving.

Bowchicawowow · 18/01/2019 09:30

The Archbishop of York has come in for a lot of flak because he tweeted a gushing prayer for the DoE and failed to mention the other people involved in the collision until an half-arsed tweet thirty minutes later.

Mumberjack · 18/01/2019 14:25

It’s less of an old age thing I bet, more a case of a lifelong shit driver who was until yesterday able to rely on his arrogance and standing.
Wonder how much the palace is trying to bung the others involved including the parents of the baby??

Mumberjack · 18/01/2019 14:26

@bertrandrussell a lot of ‘Diana arranged it’ stuff on Twitter today from the admittedly questionable characters I follow in there Grin

BertrandRussell · 18/01/2019 15:30

Laiste · 18/01/2019 16:10

That's very good Bert Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 18/01/2019 16:28

@Bowchicawowow I had exactly the same thought about that prayer. The other people had to go to hospital. The duke escaped unharmed. I'm a royalist. But the other people affected are just as important. Do feel a bit sorry for the due as all people are bothered about are his manners. Apparently the first thing he did was ask about the other people involved

ALongHardWinter · 18/01/2019 16:58

I'm amazed that he's still driving at the age of 97!
