He's fine, apparently, but the car overturned. Nr Sandringham.

Well the other driver will have a story they can dine out for the rest of eternity - the day I was in a crash with the Duke of Edinburgh.

Highly likely that the royals don't have car insurance, as it would be ruinously expensive and you don't actually need it if you can lodge a suitably large sum with Lloyds of London.

I suppose if there is any suggest that the DofE was at fault or is no longer capable of driving safely, he will stop driving from now on.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/01/2019 19:29

Anecdotally I know someone older than the DofE who is still driving, takes the medical and is a safe and competent driver

I wonder if there is anyone out there who would be old enough have been driving since before tests were legally required? If it was 1934, they'd have to be around 102 now?

DM always said that our old next door neighbour had been driving since before driving tests, but he's long dead.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 17/01/2019 19:29

Well he pulled out of a driveway onto a larger road and the other car went into the side of his - so there’s not really any way it wasn’t his fault, is there?

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2019 19:32

My uncle has an aunt who is 102 :) don't know if she drives but it sobers me that she was in her thirties when ww2 started

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2019 19:33

Sorry twenties. An adult anyway

HowlsMovingBungalow · 17/01/2019 19:33

Photos show a side road and a main junction, not a drive way.

Interesting! I’d love to know.

I know two people who never took a test in a car Grin

Jaxtellerswife · 17/01/2019 19:39

@JacquesHammer I think there must be, there was a programme a while ago called 100 year old driving school or something. They had all been driving a long time. It was very good, obviously some were advised to get off the road sharpish lol but some were very competent.

Confused

Under those circs. i'd say it was almost 100% likely to be his fault. He's pulled out in front of someone. How else would it happen?

noideaatallreally · 17/01/2019 19:56

In answer to the question is there anyone driving who didn't need to take the test I think there may be. During World War II driving tests were suspended. I believe that members of the armed forces who were taught to drive as part of their duties were not required to pass a test, nor take it after the war ended, so anyone who was say 18 at the end of the war would be what, 90/ 91 now?

RiaParkinson71 · 17/01/2019 19:57

He is remarkable for his age and has been great consort for this country. His service to the realm is outstanding... but I think it's time he handed his licence in.

RiaParkinson71 · 17/01/2019 20:09

....& he was fitter than a butchers dog when he was younger! 🤭

eurochick · 17/01/2019 20:10

My grandad (who would be in his 90s now) never took a test. Apparently he was in the back of a troop transporter when the driver was taken ill. Whoever was in charge asked if anyone could drive. No takers. So he asked if anyone would like to have a go. My grandad did, and when he came back from the war they just gave him a civvie licence. He was a brilliant driver.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/01/2019 20:15

The Queen also learned to drive, fix trucks and all sorts of other stuff as part of her war duties, but as the Monarch, doesn't need a driving licence anyway.

ThunderStorms · 17/01/2019 20:16

There were three other people involved. I think they deserve a mention instead of all this sucking up to a man who’s ridiculously privileged and doesn’t give a hoot about any of them.

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2019 20:18

How do the three other people involved deserve a mention when nobody knows who they are? How do you know he doesn't 'give a hoot'? Confused

ThunderStorms · 17/01/2019 20:21

They deserve a mention because they were involved and they were injured.

Just look at the selfish statement from Sandringham. They don’t give a hoot. Not even a sentence to wish the others involved well. Selfish.

TwitToWoo · 17/01/2019 20:21

Agree, Thunder....the sychophancy on this site for these losers is repulsive.

Interesting, SparklingBrook that you are still enthusiastically contributing to a thread that you bossily told everyone shouldn’t be here until “all the facts are known”.

EggysMom · 17/01/2019 20:23

Whether he needs to have a licence or not ... Should he have been driving? Really? He wasn't fit to attend church a couple of months ago. He has staff who could drive him (which many 90-odd year olds don't). Where was the judgement call?

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2019 20:23

Twit I have posted 3 times. Hardly 'enthusiastically'. Hmm

AlsoBling2 · 17/01/2019 20:41

Well, we have had a couple.of accidents on our corner because our road is relatively small, turning left or.right into a much bigger road. But for some reason, people coming from the right tend to go insanely fast, accelerating from a small roundabout. So if you aren't careful, you can pull out thinking you have loads of space, not realising how fast the other is going. We have had 2 significant accidents as a result recently.

So basically I would say while it's likely he is at least partially responsible, it's not impossible there were other factors at play.

Either way, accidents are always stressful and often result of mistakes from multiple parties.

brizzledrizzle · 17/01/2019 20:46

I think he should probably stop driving, I'd say the same about anybody his age who had pulled out in front of another car from a side road. Maybe his speed/distance judgement or eyesight isn't as good as it used to be.

Anapurna · 17/01/2019 20:47

He’s probably going to be affected by shock much more because of his age. But why was he driving in the first place?

Bezalelle · 17/01/2019 20:48

Prince Philip is immortal!

EdtheBear · 17/01/2019 20:55

Why was he driving ?
Mmmm because he wanted too and has self certified that he's fit enough too.

Personally I don't believe we should allow people to self certify they are fit to drive. But nor should age be an automatic barrier.

Older people should have proper medicals, tied into existing NHS check-ups, before they can renew their licence.
