Anyone else never ever dyed their hair?

Greys are starting to come in so I was thinking about how I'll probably have to start dying it in the next few years. (I know I don't have to, but I don't want to go grey yet.) I have never in my entire life used hairdye, not even a temporary one. My DSis thought that was pretty weird so I am wondering whether anyone else is like me? I've had hairdressers comment on the texture of my "virgin hair" so they must be able to tell.

I've never dyed mine, and don't suppose I ever will. I'm mid-50s and only have a few greys anyway (thanks granma for the genes) and like my own hair colour better than any of the dye colours I've seen. I also think if I start, when do I stop? Also I'm very lazy Grin It's nice to meet you all - my work-mates all seem horrified that I didn't go to the bottle at the first grey!

🙋‍♀️ Never dyed my hair- quite fancy going bright blue or green one day but my grey streaks in my hair is just part of who I am!

Stabbitha · 16/01/2019 11:00

Me. I'm 36 this year and want to mix my colour up a bit, but as I've never ever dyed my hair I'm worried people will think I've done it because I've found a grey.

I haven't though and I'm not even sure why I'm bothered what people think. Maybe that's why I've never dyed it, subconsciously scared of being judged.

Plus there's that memory from year 8 when Sam tried to dye hers and it went green and everyone took the piss.

No, never dyed my hair. It's very dark brown, thick, and long so while I think it would be fun to bleach and dye it I think it would be a very expensive endeavour.

I'm mid 30s now and the greys are slowly coming; eventually when I start to be noticeably grey I will start dying it.

I had highlights in the 80s, since then I’ve used those shampoo colours which last around 6 washes on rare occasions but I’ve never completely dyed it.
I probably could do with it as the white hairs are coming through (though I’m blonde so they’re not too obvious yet) but I hate the thought of dealing with roots which need redoing regularly, my hair grows quickly.

Allfednonedead · 16/01/2019 12:01

I once tried to make my hair go purple with a temporary dye, but it just went pink - possibly because it’s so thick and coarse, apparently.
Since then, I’ve never done more than wash and condition it and I’m getting a fabulous Cruella de Ville style white streak across the top of my head.

Not never, but very little.

I had a few rounds of subtle highlights in my 20s, but it just seemed like a lot of expense and bother for little benefit.

My hair is thick and healthy with a variety of tones. Very dark brown on the underside through to a mix of blonde on top. The last few years, around this time of year, I've put a 24 wash temporary red on to brighten it up until the spring and it blends in well. No roots as it just fades off and no damage from stripping the colour.

The greys are still at the is it a blonde stage. Occasionally it is the coarser texture that tells me it isn't, and the random couple I have can be plucked if they are in a more obvious place. I don't have a long term plan. Grey/ silver/ white can look lovely, it's the awkward peppercorn phase in-between that I'm not sure about.

I'd love to be naturally white in my old age and have free liscence for unicorn hair Grin

Had mine coloured once - had it done by the hairdresser about 10 years ago - didn't look that different to my own colour so didn't have to worry about it looking weird as it grew out. Found the whole process incredibly boring and time consuming and decided that I preferred my own colour even with the liberal sprinkling of greys that are rapidly appearing Grin

ElvisParsley · 16/01/2019 13:50

I had highlights in my 20s, not for covering grey, just because I fancied a change. Couldn't afford to keep it up though, so only had it done a couple of times and went natural for the next 20 years.

It doesn't bother me, DS8 hates my grey hairs though. He gets upset that it reminds him I am aging. So I will probably start an occasional cover up job to keep him happy.

Cheesycheesytwist · 16/01/2019 13:58

I never have. Got a few greys but my natural hair colour is nice and my hair is in really great glossy condition because I've never put chemicals on it or heat styled it (apart from occasionally for a party). Not planning to either really. I agree with a pp who says your hair matches your skin tone, I always find it very obvious when hair is dyed.

EyeDrops · 16/01/2019 15:00

Never here either. Always quite liked my hair colour, it's a rich dark colour. However, I'm only 30 and am noticing increasing grey strands that are a noticeable contrast.

I just know that I'd be dreadful at upkeep/maintenance of dyed hair though, and have better things to spend my money on! We'll see how I feel if the greys progress, but I'd like to stay natural if I can.

Borntobeamum · 16/01/2019 15:04

Toners aged about 12, then henna on and off as an adult (brown on brown so no real colour change, just more depth). Never used permanent or semi-permanent or had it done in a salon - in my 50s now and pluck out the odd grey, I have dark hair so they are easy to spot.

Chewbecca · 16/01/2019 15:15

I didn’t ever throughout my teens, twenties and thirties. But come mid forties, the greys were starting to irritate me, individual ones of a different texture literally sticking out. So I had some low and high lights put through to try to make them blend in a little better. I’ve had it done 3 times now, each about 6 months apart. I don’t feel the colour is ‘right’, it isn’t quite me. But it has made the thick, coarse grey ones less in your face so i guess it achieved what I asked for. It’s due to be done again now really. I’m not sure where I am going with it!

It’s a challenge starting to become a ‘hair person’ when you never have!

I put henna in it once and looked like basil brush for 6 weeks. Never again. I'm mid 40s now and going white - I have no greys only pure white ones so when it's all gone I will go full unicorn as a PP said. Til then - far too lazy.

StandardPoodle · 16/01/2019 17:15

I tried a wash in/wash out for a years or so in my fifties then decided to go with my natural salt and pepper. Much less hassle!

Clutterfreeintraining · 16/01/2019 17:37

I dyed my dark brown hair, every 4-6 weeks, to cover the grey and then went cold turkey. Stopped dyeing it about 4 years ago, aged 35 and found it very liberating. It probably is aging but I feel much more confident now I'm not trying to constantly hide my roots.
