Is this just a sales call or do I actually need to do it?

I just had a call from a company in Manchester saying they were doing a review for my life insurance to check details so it would actually pay out if I died. I was suspicious because I get a million sales calls a day - especially when he said 'we can add on to your policy and add the length of your policy'. However he did have the right insurance company and we do have life insurance with them.

I told him to email me and that I don't talk to people on the phone - but is this the right response? Is there a chance there's any validity to this call?

I feel like one of those old dears on a consumer interest programme! I HATE these type of calls!

Thanks in advance

Genuine companies don’t often cold call. Be very suspicious.

Call the FCA to check if the company are authorised to offer you advice on and arrange your life insurance products.

ok, that's a good idea. Thanks.

I would be incredibly suspicious too! Can you phone up your life insurer independently and ask if they are aware of the practice?

Ive got into the habit of cross checking on "whos calling me" for numbers I dont know/not expecting, Its good for highlighting suspected spam callers.

Thanks, biscuit, I checked on 'who called me' or something and it looks like a spammy thing. Now I feel stupid. My mum lives in Manchester (and I don't know her landline no.) or I wouldn't've bothered to answer the call!

Now I feel stupid.

Well, you shouldn't. You thought there was a slight possibility it was genuine so you decided to dig a bit to make sure. Sounds pretty sensible to me.

Don't feel stupid. There scammers are brilliant social engineers. It might be worth alerting your insurance company as they might have had a data breach. Or your email has been breached so they got the info from there. Might be worth changing email passwords just in case.
