I phoned in October for an upgrade on a contract that ran out in Feb and they waived the early upgrade fee of about £270. That was with EE.

Why not buy a new phone with the money you get from the old one, plus extra for a newer phone and get a sim only contract. Giffgaff start at £5 a month.

I held on until closer to the time and then EE waived my fee too.
Personally I would hold out as long as you can but that's just me

Early Upgrade Fees usually just cover the remaining cost of the handset. They're cheaper than Early Termination Fees which account for line rental too.

It's depends on how desperate you are for a new phone as to whether you're silly or not I suppose

@kittenfun are you me?!?!

I'm also hoping to buy our contract on Friday, doesn't end until June either.

And then I'll trade in my old iPhone 7 and hopefully that'll even out the costs?

I'm also unsure of how sensible an idea it is! My screen is broken and I'd like the Google Pixel 3 Grin

I currently have an I phone 7 upgrading to an iPhone 8 Plus

I upgraded early with 3 last year, probably about two months early. They gave me a discount on what was left to pay and I didn't have to pay it that day, they added it to my next bill.

I also asked for an iPhone 7 Plus (upgrading from a 6S) but they didn't have the colour I wanted so gave me an 8 Plus with no upfront cost and a better data plan for £2 a month more than I would have been paying for the 7 Plus.
