Are feature walls still popular?

We are redecorating our sitting room. I am not great with the whole interior world and despite spending time scrolling through Pinterest I am still struggling. The room is quite a good size, a rectangle. Should I go for one wall with wallpaper on and paint the others? I’m so indecisive and clueless really. Can the creative amongst us help?? Please!!

I would say the fashion for very bright flowery wallpapered feature walls is long gone but a subtle feature wall is nice. We have a different colour on the wall with the chimney breast in the lounge. We're not into wallpaper so its just painted. I guess you need to look at your existing furniture and floor/carpet and look at colours that will complement them, unless you're starting from scratch?

Yes we are starting from scratch!

Totally agree with Janepear that those dreadful modern floral walls are definitely not good anymore...if they ever were. They always had some accent colour like purple or teal and were truly nasty. But an accent wall where you use texture or subtle colour change can work still. Like a textured paper in the same tones as the painted walls.

Post in Home Decoration with a pic Grin

What direction does the room face? Does it get much natural light?

Are you keeping current furniture? What colour are sofas etc?

Personally I like wrap-around colour or (at a push) deeper colours in the alcoves!

I have a deep purple chimney breast feature wall and I HATE it. It's 13 years old now. Need to redo it but the amount of paint to cover it up is putting me off!

I think 1 feature wall is a bit naff to be honest - although have just down my children’s room

In my living room I have two opposite walls in geometric wallpaper and the other two painted.

We've got our fireplace in a feature paper, it's very pale and a large art deco kind of print.
I'm not keen on the whole bold floral papers.

You should do what you think looks nice, if you find a paper you like then give it a try, it's easy enough to strip and paint plain if you don't like it.

A friend who has a good eye just painted her living room a soft cream. On one wall arould the chimney breast and alcoves she has cream wall paper with a very subtle gold design. Its barely noticable but at night when her nice lights are on the gold shimmers a little and its quite effective. So l agree. Mad wall no! Subtle change of texture loooks good.
