Queries on handyman

I am hiring a local handyman to do a whole load of jobs for me, which he estimates will take approximately 5 days. He is supplying some materials as he gets a discount, and has asked for a deposit against those (and I guess to show good faith in him blocking out an entire week of his time for me).

  1. I am a little cautious with "estimate" - I feel like I should ask for a written quote to ensure the job is done within the time/cost agreed.
  1. I will check references for the jobs, but anything else I should think about in that regard?
  1. He is not VAT registered but think he is expecting cash or BACS payment upon completion (will check). Anything else to consider there?
  1. ???

I have just recently had quite a but of stuff done by a handyman but provided all the materials - he had the tools and expertise. He estimated the number of days work it would be and I paid per day. He is extremely fast and efficient and worked 815 till 4 each day with a very short lunch break and I felt I got brilliant value. I paid him bacs at the end

The materials are a mix:

  1. Some he is providing (his own preferred brand for sundries etc)
  2. Some I am buying outright
  3. Some I paying for, using his trade discount

I don't have any reason to doubt him, but I'd rather belt and braces now, just to be on the safe side.
